Queen as a Heavy Band???

Back in the 70s, US fans would prefer the heavy songs, and Europe would, I wouldn't say prefer, but accept the soft songs.

Europe got 'Spread Your Wings'
US got 'It's Late'

Europe got 'Save Me'
US got 'Need Your Loving Tonight'

A lot of classic rock radio stations in the USA today, don't play much love songs or pop songs with a ton of keyboards and synthesizers. No A Kind Of Magic, Radio GaGa, I Want To Break Free, Who Wants To Live Forever, and they usually only play top 10 hits with exceptions.

A lot of US fans were wondering what happened to Queen in 1980.

Queen released the wrong songs as singles. Tear It Up, Put Out The Fire, and Gimme The Prize should of been singles. Tear It Up and Put Out The Fire were being played on radio. But the singles released were things like Body Language, Calling All Girls, I Want To Break Free, Radio GaGa... which, are songs that I never hear on classic rock radio stations, due to the excessive amount of either dance music or synths or keyboards, and drum machines.

I do know Radio GaGa was my local radio stations 'theme' in 2004... but that's because it said "Radio GaGa" and it was by a classic rock band, but I've only heard it once or twice on the radio. It's strange, they do play Another One Bites The Dust a lot, but it's not even near hard rock.

The first three albums show us what a great heavy metal band Queen were. Loads of heavy metal songs on those records. The white side of QueenII has Led Zeppelin written all over it.

I think it was the succes of Killer Queen that made them write more commercially, and in the process, they forgot their heavy metal roots. Just listen to the ADATR. White Man is the only song I would call heavy metal. (TYMD was often furious in live settings, but on the album it's just your average rocker.)

Let's talk about the band and all their albums together. Queen is a .... Band.

Queen is a Great Band. I don't want to think further about it.

Well the USA did get A Kind Of Magic as well... but I know what you mean. Princes was the US lead single (despite AKOM charting better).

Actually Princes Of The Universe got some video play... I don't know why it didn't chart :-(

Although some of my favourite Queen songs are among the heavier ones, such as the majority of Queen II, Headlong, Hitman etc, I wouldn't really consider them a "heavy band" as such, but rather a good all-round one that had its heavy moments.

Replace the phrase "good" with "excellent" and "all-round" with "varied" and I agree.
