The Beard

We all know that Freddie's beard was employed in The Miracle years to the Innuendo years. Does anyone know whose idea it was? Also, is it just me, or would Freddie have looked healthier in the TATDOOL video if he didnt shave, i mean, i know tatdool was filmed at the same time of IMSM but i think he needed the beard, it generally made him look healthier, like i nthe headlong video, he looks better than in TATDOOL

Well, your wiser then you think because your post says it all already; Freddie actually grew the beard to cover up his illness.

I suspect Freddie had seen himself at La Nit in October 1988 with Monserrat Caballe. Though far from gaunt, his skin was visibly blotchy even with the application of make-up, so perhaps, aware of the need to make several videos, he preferred to hide the illness with a beard. I don't know who's idea it was or when he actually grew it either. There is a photo in the Miracle booklet dated Queen 1989 where Freddie is clean shaven, though I suspect that photo may have originated in November 88. So i reckon it was about March of 89.

I actually think he would have been better off keeping the tache but the beard does hide some of the gauntness in the final years. Perhaps TATDOOL was all about removing the mask so to speak.

I'll be honest, I always thought he looked better with a beard anyway. He just looked like he had a huge face when he wasn't wearing a beard.

True i thought Freddie did look very well it has to be said that dispite his illness he always looked his best even till the end.
And all i can do is surrender yeah yeah

i would never guees that he was seriously ill by those two videos
and in fact he was

i don't like him with the beard, he looked best with just the moustache.

I read in Mercury and Me, that Jim Hutton claims to be the inventor of the beard, suggesting it instead of having the KS-Spots lasered all the time.

I love the 'tache but it was a cool beard too though it made him look like a completely different person, I thought he looked more unusual and exotic with it.

I agree with saltnvinigar Freddie looked great with his beard, He did a great job on the I Want it all video. He looked amazing and very sexy.

I'm glad he just did whatever made him feel better.

A question. What part of the year was the scandal video made? The 'I Want It All' and 'Breakthrough' and also I think in the 'Miracle' video, he looks very good as well. However you can tell he's getting worse in the scandal video. I can't remember where I saw it (it was probably on the 'Return of the Champions' documentary) but he was shaking, you could see it when he is holding his water. Anyone have any idea?

I think he did it to hide his sickness...It made him look much healthier and better, in my opinion. :D...Also...I think it was after "Barcelona"...where he had to shave EVERYTHING off...so maybe he just grew a beard back..instead of the usual 'stache. :D

Scandal was filmed in the autumn because the single was released October time. The Miracle came after that, around November and I disagree that he look well there, to me he looks thinner in the face than on I Want It All,which was filmed 31 March 1989. Breakthru was filmed in May/ June with invisible Man in the early summer.

well around that era his face looked kinda bloated so i think the beard looked great
..but i don't really prefer it to the AKOM era
..but i do prefer it to how he looked during the great pretender/barcelona..
