I took the survey and realized that it was mentioned. I haven't seen the film in a while, but it is AWESOME! Who else here has seen it? Did you like it? And does anyone know if this was Jake Gyllenhaal's first film? I know it's more of a cult film, but I'm just curious. Oh, and the principal (?)(Holmes Osborne) is played by one of my mom's friends. :D

One of my favorites. I have both versions on DVD :) I recommend the regular version first. The director's cut may be a bit much for someone who hasn't seen the original. Can't explain the movie or why I like it.. it's just truly original and unique. Weird, funny and sad. Brilliant :)
It wasn't Jake's first movie. His first big one was October Sky but he's been in stuff even before that I think.

It's weird.. I still haven't seen Brokeback Mountain. I love Jake and I'm gay, but I haven't seen it. Strange.

I haven't seen the Director's Cut, but I'm gonna buy it soon. Do you think it is better or worse than the edit? Thanks for the link. I like October sky (not as much as Donnie, though). I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain, either. I'd really like to though.

I've seen Donnie Darko and October Sky. Both really great films. Just I never want to mention Donnie anywhere cos everyone tries too hard to be into it, what with seeing 'Everyone dies alone' in their AIM profiles and all. Pfft.
But still very good. I've tried making sense of it, but er...yeah. Ha

I love the whole conversation about why the smurfs don't have genitalia and how 100 smurfs get to fuck smurfette.

Yeah, I really hate it when posers do that (NOT saying that you're a poser if you like the film) but it's still good. And yeah. Ditto on the 'making sense' thing.

Anyone that doesn't like Donnie Darko isn't worth talking to.
Probably my 3rd favourite film ever.
What irritates me slightly is the feeling that it was partly through accident that Richard Kelly made such a masterpiece.
The director's cut isn't as good as the original cinematic release, because it goes too far in trying to explain what it's all really about. Richard wanted the extra elements in the original release, but wasn't able to include them. Yet the exclusion of these more explanatory segments and inserts left the film asking more questions of the viewer, and gave it the awesome mystique it had.
