Album Discussion : The Beatles - The Beatles (The White Album)

Anyone else got this?

I received this on CD this week and have listened to it once.

Early impressions are that I like it; Helter Skelter, Yer Blues, Why Don't We Do It In The Road and Glass Onion in particular....

Hmm...I like it, personally...I also got it not too long ago....First impression: Not bad...

I <3333 Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, Back in the USSR, and Helter Skelter AND Glass Onion....I have to listen to it more to like it better. :-P :D

One of the most diverse albums in the Beatles discography. Simply stunning, I recommend the vinyl as the CD re-issues are utter trash. Harrison really shines through this one(Piggies, While My Guitar Gently Weeps). I dig Ringos vocals and song contribution(Don't Pass Me By) and Paul and Lennon just do what they do best, write and perform amazing songs. A near perfect album.

DAMN! You've got some listening-quotas to fill...

It's a fantastic album. It's diverse - at times, it is so diverse that it's almost like listening to a compilation of solo songs from the 4 Beatles. If they'd been solo artists at that point, they'd easily have been putting out some of the songs on there.
But there's also some pretty together songs that feel like group products.

I just have this to say: "Revolution 9" is retarded. Or massively drug-induced. Same thing.

While the White Album has a great collection of some of the best Beatles songs ever, it also has some of worse ones.

I've never liked Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, and Revolution 9 is strange, to say the least.

Don't Pass Me By & Piggies are good though.

One of the bestest albums ever.

i agree...it's diverse...and even the beatles and Goerge Martin admitted that they had aenough material for one great album...but decided to throw the lot in...this resulted in a lot of "filler"

imo - it's good but it ain;t no Revolver or Rubber Soul...and it's not a patch on Abbey Road

Side One and Two/Disc 1 is my favourite..I feel Side Three and Four/Disc 2 is..odder. Having said that some of my favourite songs are on Disc 2 - Mother Nature's Son, Helter Skelter and Long, Long, Long.

I don't like the album version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps...too...poncey. I rather the Anthology version and have had mass orgasms over the Love version. Just how I intended it when I gave it to George Harrison.

Still.. I love Help! over The Beatles and ... maybe Abbey Road too. Eee.

Yeah, George on his own with an acoustic guitar is sublime, prefer it to the out of tune mess on the album.

'Long Long Long' is my second favorite George Harrison song ever ('It's All Too Much' is my first favorite. Or just favorite, I suppose). The White Album is such a diverse mix of songs that it's a lot to take in at first, but it's probably in my top five Beatles albums. It's certainly not as good as Abbey Road, but it's also much better than Let It Be and (dare I say it) Sgt. Pepper.

^I think you'll find several who'll disagree on Sgt. Pepper...

But you know what that'll be because Sgt. Pepper's such an iconic album and those who get worked up over what you just said really don't know what they are on about. Like me it has to be said. :P So is 'White album' worth getting? I always thought if I were to get any Beatles album it would be Sgt. Peppers.

for any would-be beatles buyers out there (as a beatles fan over 30yrs)- if i were to prioritise the purchases

1. abbey road - musical perfection all over this album)
2. revolver - (diveristy is unbelievable - lennon's finest hour)
3. rubber soul - (first genuine beatles experimentation - beautifully flowing pop songs)
4. white album - (having fun and playign catchup)
5. sgt pepper - (mccartney's finest moments)

some notes - that non-beatles fans might not know - abbey rd...was finished by macca and george martin...from bits fo tapes of incomplete songs...lennon was drugged to space and the finished album was the final beatles album where they worked as a group. revolver was lennon's album and sgt pepper was macca's....back in the ussr was the first time the beatles felt they were "not setting the pace" the inspiration for this song comes from the beach boys...and the back in the ussr title is a direct reference to the beach boys "surfin usa / california girls" tunes - the tune even sounds like the beach boys
