For over 200 years, we’ve watched our proud city evolve the wrong way. But the bell has chimed! The time has come for New York to be returned to its righteous owner: The Netherlands!
A wonderful initiative!

Umm, technically, wouldn't that be the native americans?

Yes, I'll include Western Australia in that.

The natives didn't found New York. They sold a piece of land they didn't use.
Well if the natives sold it to the dutch, then there should be a receipt and there shouldn't be an issue.

The point being that the Dutch were as nasty as all other Europeans (though not interested in colonizing as much as them; we just wanted trading posts), and consequently ripped off the natives, who in turn thought they were ripping us off, because they received money for what they perceived as nothing, seeing as they didn't know the concept of owning land.
Besides, no one wanted to live there. Until pretty much the Revolutionary War, it was quite simply a swamp. Afterwards, it was a swamp with some improvements, which it remained until the late 19th century.

A - American Indians did know the concept of owning land. Otherwise the infamous Walking Purchase would not have pissed off the Delaware Indians so much. Just because Indians did not typically assume control over land the same way as Europeans does not mean they had no concept of owning land.
B - While New York City was not the largest or most productive British city in North America, it was certainly an important one after they took it over in the 1670s. New York City was, after all, the first capital of the United States for a reason.
