To all drummers...

Hi!
I'm thinking about starting playing drums. But I dont know if its better to have lessons or to learn alone. With lessons you can learn the notes and rules, but without lessons you can stimulate better your own style and your creativity. I'm mean, that's what I think. In fact, I have never sat behind a drumkit yet.
What is your opinion about what's better?

Personally, I'd go with lessons at first, at least till you get the very basics. If you take lessons you could always fall back on a career as a symphony drummer. My advice-take lessons, and play along to Zeppelin/Early Queen/Rush records and develop a style and know the techniques. Good Luck!

You definitely should go to a teacher for a while. The point of seeing a teacher is to become self-sufficient to the point that you'll be able to teach yourself, and not question your technique of learning. Good luck with that.

My sister had lessons, and she's good... I bought an electric guitar and- well... I have an electric guitar lying around the house now. :P

Lord, someone else with more patience would appreciate it so much more!

I'm learning accoustic guitar since I'm a kid and I play it pretty well. I hear a lot of music and when Queen came in my life, Roger inspired me. He's probabily the reason of my growing interest for drums and different drumarts. I have no shame in admitting it. Besides, I agree that learning construtive things, like a new instrument or a new language is never a waste of time when you have fun.

im learning without lessons and i ts great, you get your own drumming methods isntead of being told how you should hold it and how you should do things, i like they way i got cos i can adapt

Lessons are good for a while, but really they can only teach you in the style they play in (in my experiance anyway). So have lessons for a while to get the basics and some more complex stuff out of the way, then just play with yourself (pardon the pun), you will find your own personal style of playing much easier this way.
Whenever i play at gigs other drummers find it hard to share a kit with me because i have developed a very strange kit setup what with being practicaly self taught, other drummers spend ages turning it round to how proper drummers SHOULD play lol!

I would go for lessons, you'd probably find it easier... I know I would've, but my mum would never pay for them so I taught myself....

I'm not going to have a drumkit in my room.
1st: not space enough
2nd: too much noise

I know it sounds riddiculous, but thats what i'm gonna do:

I will get my junk bucket,put it upside down and put a pillow on it. Then I will look for some boxes and put pillows. I will try to make them sound different to each other, hmmm... I still dont know how, but i'll find out. For the cymbals I will make paper plates by myself and hang them anywhere : P The only thing i wont be able to do is that pedal thing. But im sure i'll find a solution.

I hope it works! I dont pretend make good music, only something to train. Then, when I grow up and live alone in my own house, I will buy a real drumkit.
