His voice became harsh around 79 due to constant touring. When you tour nine months out of the year and you're in the studio for a couple of months, it will catch up to you. Top that with drinking and staying up late partying, your voice will suffer.
The same thing happened to Robert Plant during is Zep days. There are some live recordings where his voice sounds like crap, and some recordings he sounds great. Constant touring with do that to you.
Of course, smoking doesn't help.

I beg to disagree. I think Robert Plant sounds crap on all live recordings, but I guess that's just me. Especially on "Stairway to Heaven". It seems like he tweaked his voice a lot in the studio to get perfection on the song because IMO Led Zeppelin is a band that doesn't sound better live than in studio. He used to shorten the notes on "Stairway to Heaven" live because...hell who knows why? And in one recording you can hear him screech like an idiot even though there's nothing like that on the studio track. No offense to other Zep fans, I'm one myself and I love Robert Plant anyway. I don't think you can find any LIVE recordings of "Stairway to Heaven" that sound good =P(unless you're an Über-Zephead that would love their songs regardless of their quality).
Robert Plant, to be honest, isn't really a consistent singer at all, whatever way you look at it. His voice sounds really crap in the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, even though his performance of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was bearable. Freddie was consistent till his death, I'd say...

I admit that the versions on "How The West Was Won" are better than most live versions but they're nowhere near as good as the studio version, IMO. =P

I have seen footage from 1991 where he's smoking though so if he did give up it couldn't have lasted long. I think he cut down smoking though when he found out he was ill.
