While reading the initial post, I kept going "Why, why, why???".

Those people were not the only ones effected. Leukaemia continues to kill more people - I don't know at what rate currently, but I would be surprised to hear that the issue has evaporated since we learned about it in school.

There are also people in other situations that would surely give you a huge "reality check". People living and suffering in conditions that people like "you and I" would have trouble imagining.

You can take something away from this more than "It's so awful". You can appreciate the life you have, for one - I mean, at least you most likely have your health, to some degree and relative safety (I'm not speaking just of atomic bombs, but of threats many people face even today in other parts of the world).

And you could even become compelled to do something about the suffering that is still going on in other parts of the world. Should we help them, or is it "just the way it is ?" I don't know, but it's up to you.

In any case, you can take away more from this - that you experienced only visually and from the safety of an immobile and old photograph - than just "wow".

Key word? Right
However back to the original topic I always think of that little Vietnamese girl, Kim Phúc, after she was napalmed by a South Vietnamese pilot. It's so very disgusting that we have weapons like that. Fighting for peace? I'll just stick to my Stolen Generation, thank you very much.

No, Sasha..it's not 'right'. Just another 'we'll show the English how much we hate them' moment remenscient of the Boston Tea Party. Losers. Now look where you are. Michigan a.k.a America's Toilet, 'Dumpster State' or 'that place near Wisconsin'.

Are you aware of how long it took me to find out a state near Michigan? TOO LONG. Looks like we need another Vietnam to thin out your generation's ranks.

Same here. Do you think images from Iraq will stick in minds the way that girl's image stuck in ours?

somehow i doubt it.we are exposed to pictures of war more often now due to mass media and the internet so the images dont burn into our sub concious as being shocking.
30 years ago pictures of the hanging of saddam would of been a moment of significance and left a mental print in everyones mind, but in this day and age it doesnt have the same impact due to the over exposure of attrocities shown every minute on sky news, cnn and the like and of course sites like youtube.we as a society are getting more immune to it all.
