Never blame an author for something which could equally well be a copyeditor's fault! Or a typist's, or indeed a printer's. For years American editions of "Nineteen Eighty-Four" were missing the final number in the equation Winston scrawls in the dust of the cafe table at the end, which could have entirely changed your interpretation of the end of the novel by suggesting that perhaps he had not completely submitted to the will of The Party after all. Why? Simply because the final "5" had fallen out of the typeset when the page was printed...
