Sheer Bloody Poetry

Anyone know where I can read a copy of the Times' whole review of "Tie Your Mother Down" that called it "Sheer bloody poetry"? I've checked Queenarchives and Queenclippings and numerous other sites, but can't find it.

Sorry if the review is common knowledge or I've overlooked it, but I've always wanted to know the context the song was reviewed in. Was it a live performance or an advance copy of the album? And who was the reviewer that Queen deemed worthy enough to put their words on the album?

I've always thought that it was made up, given that it was on the album sleeve before the single had been released.

Plus, did The Times actually review albums in those days?

The review cane from the free concert at Hyde Park, not ADATR. I remember reading that the reviewer commented on a new song called TYMD and called it "sheer bloody poetry."

unfortunately the times website archives only go back to 1985 so no luck there

Great question i'm not one to be glaringly obvious but if IT was mentioned from hyde park then it can't be about TYMD because ADATR wasn't released until dec 76 a full 3 months after hyde park gig and they never played at the gig.

It must have been from a press playback just before the album was released that's my theory.

No. 'Breath' was indeed played at Hyde Park but not 'Tie Your Mother Down'. But they were both performed at Cardiff and Edinburgh.

It must have been one of the other shows, as I definitely saw a comment at one time that the quote came from the review of a live show, although memory can fail 30 years after the fact.

Yeah after research it seems they did play tie your mother down/you take my breath away at the gigs before hyde park, both edinburgh/ cardiff have these songs in setlist.

Has anyone heard these aforementioned gigs?? cardiff and edinburgh i mean.

So, does anyone have the Times clip? Lurkers want to know! :)

How can you be sure about Cardiff?

I've got a bootleg of Edinburgh, and it's not too great. Tradition has passed it along as being from the second night (9-2-76), but nobody has ever really "officially" confirmed it. My copy is a slight upgrade of the old version, but the sound is still pretty muffled. All known copies, regardless of quality, are missing the first few songs... it's Flick Of The Wrist to the end of the show. Still, it's worth hearing because Freddie is in great voice, and you get the pre-LP versions of TYMD and YTMBA.

think most people would give their gonads for a copy of Cardiff...does a recording exist?

Sir GH, of course I'm not sure about Cardiff, I can't be ... as a matter of fact Freddie said that they had played it at Hyde Park, but I don't know if he misremembered or if the bootlegs (video + audio) simply miss it. I'm not an expert on bootlegs or concerts so I may be writing nonsense here anyway ;)
