If no one has seen the ridiculous clarity of both dvd formats..you need to either drop $1,000 on one like i did..or go to yer local electroncs store and see a demo.
Imagine seeing those close-up shots of Freddie doing "Eh-oh" or "Bo-Rhap" in Blu-Ray DVD quality...
Queen Productions..you better get on this shit and start remastering the cracked negatives from the Wembley show so the clarity can be seen.

I thought that it had to be filmed in HD in order to release it in HD. Back in 86 there was no such thing as HD Television and as far as I know the concert was shot with TV cameras and not on film.

Perhaps if you can invent a time machine and go back and re-film the concert in HD you might stand a chance.

Return of The Champions and Super Live in Japan were both filmed in HD I think.
Does anyon know if this means that if you have an HD player and compatible screen then the discs will aoutomatically play in HD, or do they have to release them again with the HD video 'unlocked' as it were??

Yes they were recorded in HD but no the DVDs are not in HD. They would need to re-release them.

Yeah, you can't have HD quality from old videotaped source material, however Blu-Ray and HD can at least offer the best possible version and plenty of storage capacity.
I do hope we start to see the capacity of these discs exploited rather than just quality, so we get stuff like complete TV seasons on 1 disc and such :)
But I'm an old fashioned guy. I think this whole "quality fetish" thing is way out of hand. Rather than saving for one of these machines and HDTV so I can rebuy all my discs with fewer bonus features, I've been enjoying transferring laserdiscs to DVD lately. They look quite good to me.

Given that both Montreal & Budapest were filmed onto film, surely they COULD be mastered in HD from the original source?

What else was done on film? Houston? Japan 82?
Of course, most of the early videos were done in HD, but releasing another videos compilation would be pushing the boundaries of a sick joke.

So long as it was filmed on actual 35mm film, it can be converted to high definition, however, wembley was filmed on 1 inch tape, and thus will never be in HD, you can only upscale it.
