Well, I really, really hate that Sanjaya dude but then again I find American Idol extremely stupid. They've spawned countless Britney Spears-esque talentless rats, especially that Kelly Clarkson person...

My sister stopped going to Idol auditions when she took Copyright classes, and realised how screwy the contract had the potential to be. She gave up when she read the clause that said they had the rights to do what they wanted with her 'in the universe' or 'in the whole universe' or something.
Granted, they have to cover their arses when it comes time to using Idol footage on the first Martian colonies and so forth.... but really. It gets to a point where you really have to wonder what the world is coming to.

I'll be blunt: I think American Idol is the biggest waste of time, money, and talent in the history of entertainment.
Three reasons:
1. When you break it all down, it's just one big popularity contest. Singing ability is no longer a big factor in who America votes for. These days it seems to be more about how they look and act compared to how they sing. A singer doesn't need to look attractive to be famous. Look at people like Ozzy and Freddie. They weren't famous because they had a 'popular' look, they were just that damn good on and off stage.
2. Somehow, America has been completely brainwashed by this crap. When the votes for the next American Idol total way more than the votes for the next President of the United States, something ain't right.
3. When you appear on American Idol, you pretty much give up every bit of creative freedom, whether or not you win. You become their new toy...you sing what they want you to sing, you go where they want you to go, and it's pretty sad. I'll give credit to people like Kelly Clarkson; though I don't like her music, she did break out of their grasp and made a name for herself. Other than that, there's no real prize for singing on some overrated, senseless, sorry excuse for a TV show.

^ Correction: American Idol is not the biggest waste of time, New Zealand Idol is the biggest waste of time! Ask most people here and they don't even know who won the last two. And last time around they had to give away a car and 50 grand (plus the recording contract) to get people to actually sign up! I swear there must be something seriously wrong with TVNZ if they decide to do another one, it's embarrasing now.

While it's not the most intelligent TV show, it's decent for families. I watch it with my 11-year-old without worrying who will shoot who, what obscenities will be shouted and when the next "love" scene will pop up. It introduces her to various musical genres and opens a dialogue between us about our likes and dislikes in music, clothing, attitude and more. Also, she sees from Simon how cruel people can be, and she sees from Paula how some well-meaning people go out of their way to avoid confrontation... and look ridiculous in the process. Randy is the right mix of gentle and constructive, and she sees that, too. I'd much rather have her eager to watch AI than many of the other primetime TV shows.
