I gotta agree. The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke is a great song! I love the sound of Freddie's voice in it ... it's just so different from his "normal" singing voice. It's a great exapmle of how revolutionary Queen really was! They were able to adapt to a variety of singing styles and thats part of what made then soooooooo amazing. Also, just thought I'd add that the song is, evidentally based on a painting by Richard Dadd. If you google it you can see an example of the painting. The song is a very literal description of the it. You can see the "nymph in yellow" and "Queen Mab" and obviously the "Fairy Feller" swinging an axe over hi head. It's very cool

I wanted to start a discussion on this song, but luckily, there's already one. What I find interesting is that if you consider that english was not Freddie's mother tongue (it's his first language, but it was obviously not his mother's first tongue, which would be Parsi). What I mean is that he didn't think that Freddie had a so great knowledge of middle english and english mythology. I think that song is more difficult to understand for those of us who don't have english as our native language. Anyways, maybe it's hard to understand for the natives. Freddie was really clever and mystic in the first four albums. When you take songs like MOTBQ, Great King Rat, Bohemian Rhapsody, Mad the swine, Jesus, Ogre Battle, you're talking about a guy whose very cultivated.
Theres a good youtube video with the lyrics and the painting. It zooms in to show the characters as they're mentioned. This is my favorite song ever. Song structure unmatched amazingly youthful vocal performance with the classic "cool whip" tone Freddie had on those early records (I'm trying to coin a new phrase to describe Freddie's voice back then, you know like Van Halen's guitar has the brown sound I'm thinking cream or just calling it cool whip). It's the best Queen song.
A long time ago I searched the internet for info about this painting. Then with the words of the song I studied the figures on the painting and placed the correct names on it.
