Brian's Bad Memory

I think his current attitude is A RESULT of being on American Idol last year.

(Though he should have had the same attitude before that IMHO and never supported such trash to begin with.)

Afaik, accusations were dismissed. And even if they were true, it doesn't mean his work can't be good. For instance, Michel Jackson's a paedophile and I hate him for that, but I love his music and the way he sang and danced.

Still, if we want to speak about Brian's "excellent" taste, remember when he said that Beyoncé is a goddess?

People let's get real here. The participation in American Idol was hypocritical by Brian. End of story. He used it as a means to expose the musical and the tour and anyone who believes otherwise is naive. Brian had spoken out against these reality shows well before last year (Mig from WWRY was a finalist for the INXS show and Brian spoke out on that in September 2005, a full 6 months before the were on AI.) To appear on AI and pretending not to know what it was all about is a stretch that defies comprehension. Remember, Roger and Brian were particularly bitter about The Sun and Rupert Murdoch hounding Freddie in the months leading up to his death. But when it came time to promote the musical in London, which paper did they go to? The Sun!!! Disgraceful, but the apologists will cut Brian slack on everything and anything. Separate Brian the musician from Brian the businessman.

Indeed. Being hypocrit is part of being in showbiz. Otherwise he'd simply be an astronomer uploading the odd video on youtube, but not a rock star. Sad but true.

That's a valid point Sebastian, unfortunately, people here jump all over people who don't love everything Queen related. It's like Brian constantly complaining about Queen's pereception as a singles band. Yet they release every one of their singles on compilation albums in the album opening slot to help feed the QP coffers. Same as the musical and the tour. Song choices were made from the POV of putting bums in seats with zero risk. Apologists would say that's obviously the way to go as businessmen. I'd agree, but then don't complain when the press label you as a singles band when you leave out all of your early stuff from the musical and tour, which is infinitely superior to play the hits used to appease the middle of the road music fan!

Agreed!

Well, yes it does seem as if there's hypocrisy there, but I don't think he's forgotten they were on AI or the comments he made about INXS.

But, I'll give him some benefit of the doubt as there could have been other reasons for AI in addition to the obvious promotional angle. Perhaps AI were going to do a Queen night regardless, and Brian thought he might as well give the contestants any kind of help he could. It's the kind of way he'd think. He doesn't blame the people that take part (even though I think he said something like no real professional would dream of taking part in such things - maybe he should tell that to MiG?)

Anyway, many of these business decisions may not be made by him and Roger. I think they leave many things up to Jim Beach and his team - hence the horrible Wembley tent, and probably using the Sun for promotion etc. Maybe I'm cutting him too much slack, and I know he's not perfect by any means, but equally I don't think he's heartless or intentionally hypocritical or capitalist in nature. Not in the core of his character.
