The "beep" in Drowse...?

In the intro on "Drowse" at 14 seconds, there is a "beep"..

I got it on my CD, and also on MP3..

Is there anyone who knows if it's also on the LP?

Great Guitar work by Brian on this song but one of the absolute worst Queen Songs ever. Sometimes I wonder why they let songs written by Roger even make it on an album.....

I would agree it's the guitar - specifically feedback. And yeah, Roger's songs *tend* to let down the earlier albums. Queen II would be as good as ANATO if Loser in the end wasn't on it! IMHO!!!

Interesting thought. I think Drowse is Roger's best song, and probably one of the darkest in the Queen catalogue. There's just a feeling of hopelessness to it, which is usually the opposite of Queen music. Roger was great at tapping the small town angst of young people in his early stuff. Plus, and I didn't know this until last year, when they recorded it, it was meant to sound washed out.

I cannot stand no more of that jazz or fun it, but modern times of rock and roll and TF of shear heart attack are great.

It's interesting how people perceive things so differently. I have always considered Drowse one of Roger's best songs--lyric-wise, meter-wise, etc.--just the sound of it is so different from how he usually writes. I didn't like it the first few times I heard it, but it gradually grew on me.

I personaly think this is THE best song writen by Roger Taylor, and maybe the best lyrics ever in a Queen-song.
Especialy the last verse:

Never wanted to be the boy next door,
always thought I'd be something more,
but it ain't easy for a smalltown boy,
it ain't easy at all.
Thinking it right, doing it wrong,
it's easier from an armchair.
Waves of alternatives wash at my sleepiness,
have my eggs poached for breakfast, I guess.


I agree that it took some years to like it, but now it's really great! And it's on my favourite album, A Day at the Races...

Roger Taylor's songs have always been particular favorites of mine, from the hard rocking Modern Times Rock and Roll to the beautiful ballad These Are The Days of Our Lives it is simply pure in every sense.

Taylor's songs were, in the early days, written for the sake of rock and roll. While the others were off messing around with those overdubs he sat in the studio simply rocking out. If anything Roger Taylor, in a sense, is the heart and soul of the band when it comes to good old fashioned rock songs. Then again, that's just my opinion. Everybody is entitled to this or that, so whatever.

Now, what about Drowse? Well, I find the lyrics in that song to be very realistic and not so much fairy this or black queen that. For a while I would listen to that song constantly, and if I'm not mistaken it was written in a 6/8 kind of feel. I'm not sure, I'd have to go back and take a listen. Anyway, the song has a real rolling kind of feel to it, much like I'm In Love With My Car. In the end, I like the song. I think it was a good transition from Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy to Teo Torriatte on the A Day at the Races album.

I love Roger's stuff. Drowse is one of his best songs!

Great observation ITSM, and I agree with your sentiments about the last verse. That's the type of song that if it were written by Springsteen or Dylan, writers would be falling all over themselves describing how those two have tapped into the psyche of American youth, and call them poets. Drummer from a long haired British band writes it? Let's ignore it altogether.

One of Rogers best (imo). Wonderful loose, dreamy, sloshy feel to it. Sounds like Roger played most of the instruments on it.

rogers 80's/90's queen stuff was so much better than his 70s on the whole. IMHO!

Didn't hear the 'beep' in Drowse but as the discussion doesn't seem to be about that anymore...

I've got to say I don't like Drowse very much but I do greatly admire Taylor's talent as a songwriter. He definitely was talented and people are a bit prejudiced against him because he's a drummer.
Loser in the End took a couple of listens before I enjoyed it. Makes a pleasant introduction to Side Black and end to Side White. Sort of: 'The soft stuff's ended listener, but the hard stuff's only just beginning. PTO'

One of Roger's best songs, in my opinion.

Always reminds me of long hot summer days as a kid, back in the 70's (yes, I am old!)
Just a real laid-back, lazy feel to it, with a vocal to match the sentiments.......brilliant!

Must go and listen to it now, and long for the summer!
