I was just pointing out that clinical depression is a disease just as any other (Not feeling "down" or having a blue mood, etc) and it needs treatment.

Thank you Janet....you took the words right out of my mouth, which is a good thing because I've been so sick with a head cold this week I've been unable to muster the desire to point all of this out.
Depression is a disease, a serious one. From the outside it looks like it's just a stupid thing you can get over, but I can tell you from personal experience that it is not. You cannot get out of it yourself...you are helpless to the disease until it is treated properly. Unfortunately, that also means you have to pursue the treatment yourself, because just like drug addiction you have to admit you need help.
To be able to truly understand depression and how it affects your life, you have to experience it...it cannot be described. But I would not wish what Janet and I have both been through on my worst enemy. So don't judge until you can truly understand and empathize with what a person is going through.

Difference being - depression is not something you dabble with. It just happens. Drugs, however, are a choice, with addiction (often) being the result.

Indeed, Magical...that was a bad analogy. Being a despression sufferer myself I know well the disease.
I just chalk that analogy up to the fact that it was early and my brain wasn't quite functioning yet.

HistoryGirl, totally off topic, but I had to tell you I love the pic in your profile. Very pretty!

Thanks Janet....found it one day on the internet when I was a bit bored.

I guess I am Owen Wilson's only fan...ever.
Perhaps that's why he tried suicide.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to dis what you said. I just have a 'thing' about drugs, alcohol and the choices, or rather the excuses people make while using and abusing them.
And I'm sorry to hear that you suffer from depression. I hope it's not something that affects you on a daily basis.

I know you weren't dissing me Magical...I realized after you pointed it out that it was a bad anology is all. What I meant is that you have admit that you need help when you have depression, which is hard to do when you are so lost in that vortex.
And thanks again for your personal concern, but I'm much better now...I'm even off the medication now after years of being on it and counseling.
Hopefully I'll stay that way, but I recognize the fact that because it runs in my family and I've been diagnosed with it once, I'm going to be very susceptible to suffering from it again.

as a diabetic i must point out one little detail.
not all diabetics are on medication ie insulin.
my diabetes is controlled purely on a healthy diet and im not on any medication now because of it.so in a way, having a better station in life actually improves the control of diabetes as one can eat a better quality of food and not sugary rubbish ie "buy one,get one free" from cheap downmarket supermarkets.
recent reports here in the UK regarding diabetes suggests that people living on a minimum wage are twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life than those on high incomes due to the quality of food that they eat.[/QUOTE]
I realize that, as I am also a diabetic who controls it through diet and exercise. I have never been on medication for it. :-) I picked diabetes out of thin air. you guys are lucky you dont have type 1! my dad has it, so theres a possibility i might get type 1 within the next 5 or so years, if i have that gene (it usually skips a generation and goes to the males in my family, but its still possible). im more than likely getting type 2 in my older years...so basically im screwed >.< buts its assuring enough to hear that good diet and exercise makes it bearable.
for anyone who chose to ignore my second post, i do have depression and have been battling it since i was around 8. i never said celebrities shouldnt think or feel the way the rest of us do, but at the same time, they should take a moment to realize, they could have anything they want, including treatment at the drop of a hat. i, myself cant afford that kind of thing, so i base my mental and physical health on pure remedy and herbal medicines. yes, like cancer or diabetes it can happen to anyone, just as joxer said, but i have a reason to think the way i do towards people who attempt suicide or suffer from depression, and make bold moves like that. im surprised people havent given the 'everyone has a different threshold of pain' lecture. again...i wont change my mind.
i believe someone else was also angry with those who make stupid choices and pin the consequences on a disease (drug addiction). it angers me that people do make those stupid choices and then play the victim-got news for you, you couldve said no to those drugs, that 2 letter word can do alot for you. now learn to deal and heal. again, no sympathy for those who choose to do that.
