Note that it's far easier to share a show in mp3, because it takes far less time to upload it. Also note that he has not edited any of his recordings or created compilations to give the best version possible. He simply downloaded and reshared. Sharing mp3s should not deserve much credit in today's world of quality preservation. You're right, there is no law against mp3, but we should be doing our best to preserve the quality of these precious recordings, not make them worse than they already are. Honestly, converting an old recording to mp3 is like a historian handling ancient papyrus with dirty hands.
A high quality Houston is one of those things that people had been after for ages, and most people would be willing to make an exception if the only possibility was a lossy share. Since lossy sharing is permitted on this site, I think the only time it should be done, for the sake of quality preservation, is when there is no alternative.
The major problem with mp3s (as I've stated many times before) is that there are collectors (some of whom I have dealt with myself) who refuse to share their rare and uncirculated Queen recordings because they don't want them to be converted to mp3 - which they are confident will happen here. This place is notorious for being the place where people upload mp3s passed off as FLAC files. So, here we are with yet another version of the second night in Fukuoka '79 in lossy FLAC, when we could perhaps have had a new show from the '76 US tour by now.
I have done my research. Out of all the major bands, Queen has had the fewest number of new unofficial recordings emerge in the last ten years. This place is largely to blame. If Queenzone adopted quality standards, Queen collectors would start to gain respect in the wider collecting world, something which at the moment we have little of, if any at all. Yes, there is a collecting world outside of this website. Many downloaders still think these new recordings magically pop out of the sky.
Keeping in mind that FLAC can easily be converted to WAV and then mp3 for personal use, all I ask is for someone to provide a good explanation why lossy sharing shouldn't be banned - with exceptions like your Houston, which is still perhaps the greatest share in the history of this forum.

If we're just talking exclusively about 'download collectors' then there is still the issue of connection speeds to be resolved. There are still, unbelievably, those who still use dial-up and have virtually no choice as to deal in MP3.
I do not believe that collectors who have uncirculated material will not share on the basis of it being converted to MP3. Why? If we are all budding amateur Queen archivists/preservationists then a newly circulated FLAC gig is not going to become extinct a few years down the line. Unlike a painting by the artist Monet for example, we can reproduce new one's. That concert will always exist somewhere in it's original format. I can totally understand it makes finding the original much more difficult though. I just think it's a very convenient excuse NOT to share.
Why don't we ask Barbara/Richard to put it to the test. Ban all lossy from tomorrow say and let's see how many new gigs we get.

Perhaps you're right. But we're not there right now, so that view isn't relevant just yet. But I assure you, there are people who are sitting on recordings because of the lack of quality standards here. A couple of them don't want to have anything to do with Queen collectors ever again.
Just go to Bootcity, Dime, Yeeskuhl, Zomb, and TTD and simply look at the discussions people have there about their recordings. They are leagues ahead of this place, and there are constantly new recordings to show for it. These people were having the mp3-flac debates about 5 years ago. Any mention of mp3 on those websites will get you banned for life. Then go to the guitars101 forum, and look at what a mess that place is. People download the lossless files from the above websites and convert them to mp3. That website has caused people to stop sharing their gems. It's not just Queen collectors who are suffering.

People would slowly come to realize what's happening here, and over time, they may trust that the community as a whole is pro-lossless. Nothing can be promised. But it would be a step in the right direction.

But I'm afraid two seperate announce sections will cause only more trouble. Someone shares a (new)lossless show and a couple of days later the same show will be shared in the MP3 section...only if the rules are : No lossless shows allowed to re-share as MP3. But as long as some people in here don't understand (or care) about this, the only way will be to ban MP3 sharing for the future. I hope it will happen someday...
