Queen was already a band 'crowned in glory' and had a huge amount of hits and a fan base when they played Live Aid. U2 had a few albums and a couple of hits.
Think (yeah right) about early Queen with only KYA and SSOR sharing the bill in a top festival with the Beatles (their huge comeback), Zeppelin still going strong and Bowie right after Ziggy Stardust.
