WWWR/WATC single to promote LAW'86 - laughable as well?
It got A LOT of airplay on radio as well as tv and gave the album most certainly an incredible boost in sales![/QUOTE]
But that's 15 years ago... We are getting old Jeroen ;)
Queen was still a very popular band in 1992. In fact they were HUGE. Queen is still loved be the fans and even by a whole new younger generation, but nothing more than that. They are not the biggest thing anymore... In fact Queen will never have another hit album or hit single. The stuff they release is just so silly, in fact I feel ashamed for it all...return of the champions for instance, return of the 50+ wannabe cool rockers was a better title....

Ah, come on!
How many shows did you go to? Five or something?
Just because it has an ugly sleeve does not mean you need to be ashamed of the content.

9-year-olds may not download music from iTunes; but more teenagers age, which warrants this decision on Queen's part.
From CNN: "Fewer teens are stealing music:
http://mediabiz.blogs.cnnmoney.cnn.com/2007/04/10/fewer-teens-are-stealing-music/
So not all teens are using iTunes, but the trend is upwards.
Actually, it would be odd if Queen DIDN'T offer some sort of download in anticipation of QRM. My question is: Why not make it free, like Bruce Springsteen recently did? Not that this thing is going to get played on rock radio.

Daniel, don't you think the entire QRM album will be available from 7digital or whoever it is?
In which case there's no point isolating an individual track as a "single" - people can download whichever SINGLE track they like.
We're not saying there shouldn't BE download only singles per se (although some do have a preference for physical releases), the point in this thread is that there's no point having a download single to promote THIS release.

Original Post:
"I am too old for this. Who needs a downloadable live single edit in mp3 format?"
You might be too old for this, who knows. But that doesn't mean it's a bad strategy. Promotion-wise, it’s been a successful thing. And I also think it’s a great way to get new fans and listeners to notice this particular release or to learn about Queen in general.
I’ll just talk about iTunes, because that’s what I’m familiar with, but this strategy could also apply to artist websites—it’s unclear where Queen will release this digital single. But when there's a new album out by a big artist nowadays, you go to the iTunes store and you will see an announcement and an announcement of a "single." Examples: Bruce Springsteen's new album had a free single "Radio Nowhere," released. Other artists add digital exclusives and other goodies—George Harrison is on the top banner of the iTunes store at the time of this post (October 19, 2007). That's proven to be a good strategy—Bruce’s album charted at #1 the first week out. With little or no terrestrial radio airplay, this is one of the only places to get the music out there.
This is a common practice by bands to promote the new album before it comes out. It's a teaser.
I'm not talking about we diehard fans when I talk about a single. I'm talking about the casual fan or newbie for whom a digital single of “Keep Yourself Alive” would pique listeners’ interests.
So I think it’s not even a great idea—it’s a given that an artist does this. Just look at iTunes, people!
My questions?
-- Why not make it FREE? See my Bruce example above.
-- Why not put EXTRAS online, either on iTunes or on Queenrocksmontreal.com?
-- Why make it a single edit? I agree with other posters—that does sound odd?

That's not my point. My point was about the promotion use of a single...Queen will never have a hit anymore, so it's useless to release singles to promote the album...

Well, the newsitem has disappeared and in the forum of QOL moderator "G" has posted a message that "it might be back on again"...
As a matter of fact, it is back on:
