Despite being a Judas Priest fan, I can't say that I'm super familiar with that song. Furthermore, anybody here with a brain can see that this song is primarily Roger's creation. Roger plays guitar too; So, how can anyone go to assume that if there's a catchy riff in the song that Brian automatically wrote it? Remember the guitar parts that Freddie wrote for Brian to play? As far as the riff being stolen...I say Led Zeppelin is far more guilty of 'stealing' riffs than Queen. Not to knock Zeppelin either, I am keen to their music. But let's all be fair about this.

Rock is about stealing riffs. I did it last year, nobody cared. It's a rock song; riffs can only be a certain number of notes long before they get boring, and you've only got x number of keys that people will enjoy listening to, etcetera.

I love Jack Black but let's be clear; he's a parody artist, more or less.

It would be Kyle Gass, not Jack Black, as Im convinced Jack's more of a lyricist/singer who can play guitar than a guitarist who writes - I think the music comes from KG mostly.
As for whether its a rip off - a passing similarity in the main riff at most - nothing to lose sleep over, and the direction of the song is entirely different. I cant be bothered checking if its even in the same key, but to my ears its just a few similar notes - not enough to amount to any sort of copying.
And I'd bet none of the guys have heard The Metal by the D anyway, which just makes it a coincidence.
My old band were once beaten in an online BOTB by some Aussie outfit who's best song was basically Trampled Underfoot by Led Zep - now that was a rip off, as thats one riff thats far too distinctive for it to have been an original by this unsigned band, and the song as whole, including the vocal melody and the feel and direction of the song was incredibly similar.

agreee, with the above post. some parts of the metal sounds similar, far from a rip-off though. think its a fair bet that jack black or kyle gass or whoever wrote their song in turn nicked it from touch of evil by judas priest or some other of the songs that has been mentioned. their really great fans of that kind of music.
must say after a few listens that the riff sounds awesome. for me the song has been a real grower except that the chorus still sounds a bit out of place. i think its a great song, the problem i had at first was that it wasnt at all what i expected. just my opionion though:)

While we're talking about ripoffs, I'd just like to say fuck Wolfmother. I want them to take their crayons off of whatever Led Zeppelin songbook it is that they read before playing.
