He's also one of the major participants in the current debate going on in historical circles about whether books can cause revolutions (meaning all of the books written during the Enlightenment and whether or not they contributed to the French Revolution). Were the salons linked to the press? I know a lot of the "subversive books" were printed in Switzerland (like the Société typographique de Neuchâtel) and then brought to France. In Darton's most recent book translated into Portuguese (it was published here as the "George Washington's teeth lol), he tells us that Brissot acted like a spy for the Crown's police just a few years before the revolution in which he was deeply engaged. He does comment on the salons a bit, and there was a famous one, owned by a lady whose name I forgot, where there were a lot of meeting between the philosophes and people more or less in tune with the Enlightment ideas. I forgot the lady's name, it was a famous saloon.
I like Darton's books because they're a very readable and enjoyable, and, well, for people like me, who don't know anything about the topic, it helps understanding it a bit, getting a faint idea about the issue, and having fun too! I really laughed out loud when he transcribed the remarks of a chronist who commented on the fame and importance of a particular dentist in Paris, during the XVIII Century. People were so much in pain that the dentist was a kind of celebrity! Quite fun.
I read some of his books, though by no means all, and I found them all really interesting and accessible.
Way to go! I do enjoy reading about History, though I'm absolutely ignorant about it and approach it as a lay person, of course.
