Even I could think of some black rock/metal fans if I had actually put any thought into it, which I didn't. :( E.G. The guys who did the song cop-killer. If Blacks don't listen to Rock Music, they're just wise. After all, they created blues, which is way more interesting, they pretty much created Rock n Roll (Beatles did covers of Chuck Berry's songs) and paved the way for the rock of the 70's (think about Muddy Waters going eletric; Albert King; or...Jimi Hendrix). And they pretty much are what's worth in Jazz.
I take the most sophisticated white popular musicians. Take Zappa. Good guy, listened to Stravisnky (which is going back in time since he was pretty much reacting against Schoenberg and the Second Vienna Schol), and then I think of Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Charlie Mingus, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, and it's soooo sad to listen to Zappa, even though I like him. It's dispiritng.
So, maybe they got tired of beating the whites out in popular music and got tired of their own inventions - people who create things want to do something new. If I create and play the same thing over 30 years, I guess I'm fully entitled to try to fight the bore and create something new. Like:
Soul and R&B: the gorgeous Aretha Franklin, James Brown, etc.
Hip-Hop and Rap: there's very interesting stuff there.
So, blacks have always been doing their share, more than their share, in fact, in popular music.
I feel really sad that now they are going back in time and starting to listen to rock music. I think it's time for the classical music industry lift up the prejudice against blacks and let them be well educated and have their interpretations or compostions released. I have listened to a lot of good stuff already.
