We live in very scary times. Our economy is collapsing. And there doesn't appear to be any good news.

I'm worried about this. I don't understand about half of it (yeah, try explaining the basics of the stock market to a 5th grader, I was forced to learn this....stupid gifted program) but my history teacher told me it's mainly Bush's fault. Douche.

Most intelligent people in the USA (no insult to the economically inept) knew that the economy was heading in the wrong direction. It was only a matter of time before it reached this point. As far as the US being "dead", no, we're perfectly healthy (cholesterol levels may be a little high), and I hope you realize the effect our economic recession will have on your market. Not that I want to contribute to the sickening amount of arrogance that comes from the US, it's just a fact. The world market is feeling the pain.

I can't explain the entire credit crisis to you right now, but I assure you that Bush had little to nothing to do with the current credit crisis, regardless how much you or I dislike him.

Here's a brief synopsis:

It all started with federal guarantees of mortgages through GSEs like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. As a result, a moral hazard was created for providing loans to people who should not have gotten them (i.e. subprime lending). This increased the demand for houses, as people who ordinarily could not afford to buy houses began buying them. As demand increases, so do prices - and if prices had continued to climb, subprime borrowers might have been able to refinance their loans, and come out unscathed. Obviously, this could not continue indefinitely, and after prices began to fall, borrowers began defaulting on their loans.

Lenders then sold off their loans to companies like Fannie and Freddie, who securitized them as mortgage backed securities and collateralized debt obligations. Essentially, for the sake of simplification, these are like bonds whose payments are funded by mortgage payments. If mortgage payments default, it inhibits cash flows to the CDOs. Even though these securities were backed by unsafe subprime loans, they were given unreasonably (in hindsight) high ratings, and were bought by companies like Merrill, Lehman, and Stearns.

Now, what this does is takes the risk that mortgage lenders take on as lenders, and passes it off to investors. Therefore, mortgage companies had an incentive to make bad loans, and pass them off to investors. Investors had an incentive to buy mortgage securities because the government was guaranteeing them. The result is the massive shitfest we are in now.

I hope that all made sense. I took a very complicated and confusing issue and simplified it greatly, and I may have even accidentally missed or misrepresented a few, possibly important, steps. However, this is the best I have for you at the moment.
