The problems with the Mortgage Industry started before Bush was elected.  I've been in the business for nearly 15 years now.  I watched people who had no business getting mortgages... getting mortgages.  Government guidelines in place allowed for sub-prime credit scores, stated income, and Adjustable Rate Mortgages that were guaranteed to spike up to 5%.  All of this supported fully by Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve.  (The guy that controls the interest rate).  Alan was appointed in 1987 by the Reagan adminstration... not George Bush.  But Alan wasn't a complete failure.  If you remember the stock market crash in 1987, then you remember how quickly we recovered, thanks in big part to Greenspan's aggressive decisions and policies instituted then.  We pretty much gave him free reign for the next 20 years.  So blaming Bush for the housing bubble, which started this whole colapse, is about as pointless as blaming the Democrats or the Republicans for not getting something going now.  It's not one guy's fault.  The House and Senate are both controlled by the Democrats.  The executive branch is controlled by the Republicans.  BOTH sides are going to have to compromise to make this work, finger pointing does nothing but drive home the painfully clear fact that politics, once again, is being used to make decisions that affect the entire world. The good news?  Stock market is up 280 points already this morning after the 777 point plunge yesterday.  But this is going to take some time for things to get back to normal.  Obama elected or McCain elected isn't going to magically solve the problem. I still don't quite understand, but I kinda have an idea of what you're talking about. The whole economic stuff is harder than my chemistry class! I called my teacher a douche because I know it's wrong for teachers to bring up their political views and stuff like that, not Bush. But I am not Republican, so I don't like Bush anyway.

Man, you should watch Jimmy Kimmel. You'll know what bias is. I think he's the only talk show host who is too obviously pro-Obama and doesn't even try to hide it. CNN, MSNBC and almost every other news channel in the US has a slight liberal bias, IMO but Fox News has so much conservative bias, it's not even funny.

I hate bias in my school. It gets on my nerves. Anytime a teacher tells me something like who their favorite candidate is and why, I don't bother listening. And my history teacher doesn't even teach. It's more like preaching. He won't shut up about pointless topics. I'm in a regular class so I guess that explains it. I've never taken history the easy way and now that I am, I hate it.
Teachers should not express their political views, period.

I'm doing my best to 'get' this but I can't seem to... that 777 point plunge the other day... wasn't that simply a knee-jerk reaction, an example of mass hysteria? Or more accurately, an example of why this country is in the shape it's in financially... because we're stupid when it comes to finances?  

It seems like lenders AND (many of the) borrowers are to blame for the mess here. More and more Americans live on credit. It's not because they have to, so much as because there seems to be little to no self-control. They want bigger houses, newer cars, flat screen TVs and all the latest i-gadgets. I might be terribly wrong about this, and please tell me if I am, but it does seem like the big-wigs were taking advantage of a massive flaw in American thinking - that we're entitled, we can have whatever we want and we'll over-extend ourselves to get it.  

I know we can't educate society on personal accountability but I do think the pundits on TV should address this as the cause as much as they're addressing others as the cause - and no, I don't blame Bush. I think he's a blind and arrogant idiot who refused to acknowledge the financial wound before it turned all-consuming but I don't think the problem itself rests solely on him. That said, any 'solution' touted by him to be worthy of implementation must not be implemented without heavy and strict review and oversight. And I guess that begs the question - just who will review and oversee it?

I don't think we're screwed, no.  But I do think we're in for one hell of a reform!  The Senate plans to vote today and then turn it over to the House.  From what I've heard and watched, I don't see this gaining any ground.  Everyone thinks we're giving Paulson a $700 Billion Dollar cheque.  Or that we're buying failing banks with no recourse. 



The problem really is that the common-worker doesn't understand all this because it really hasn't been explained fully.  There's no PR.  All the public is getting is political rhetoric, not answers. 



But I do think the common sense will kick in, hopefully sooner than later.  Small businesses aren't going to be able to apply for credit, because there's no funding there.  How will they pay their employees, their suppliers?  Same with the new home builders.  The people that hammer the nails, cut the lumber, these are the ones that are already feeling it and it's only going to snowball.
