Hamburg Review:
The concert was in the Color Line Arena - a venue used for ice-hockey games with capacity of 16 000 - the biggest venue in Hamburg. As usual everything was clear, there was no hustle and bustle, and the concert kicked off at 20:05.
Before the beginning we could hear a whole album of Jimi Hendrix. Then came some thunders, which made my guts dance in my stomach. Afterwards came the intro of Cosmos Rockin', Surf's Up School's Out and Tie Your Mother Down. The band was in good shape.
The first songs were mostly fast with the likes of I Want It All and I Want To Break Free in there. Brian missed the beginning of the solo I Want To Break Free, but it really doesn't matter if you are in the hall. You hear all those on the recordings we share at www.queenzone.com, but it really doesn't matter in the hall. Paul sang his accoustic Seagull, before he went off stage and left Brian alone on the catwalk. He played Love Of My Life and half of '39 and said we were the best quire in the world, so he needed some assistance. Out of nowhere there was a bass drum and a chair next to him. Roger came and they played the first chorus. Then they stopped again, and the whole band came - the fabulous Spike Edney with an accordion, Jamie Moses and Danny Moranda on guitar and bass.
Then only Roger was left on stage with a small set of drums, which evolved to a whole set during the solo. He had his best shoes on for Hamburg, he said. Before that he played a solo on the electric bass with his sticks, which was cool. After the drum solo came of course I'm In Love With My Car, followed by A Kind Of Magic, sang by Roger and performed great. I couldn't help dropping some tears at Say It's Not True..., sang as on the album with Roger beginning, Brian continuing and Paul ending it in a great fashion.
Bad Company. With a real piano on stage, and Paul singing great. The guitar solo was long and consisted from Brighton Rock, Bijou and Lost Horizon. On Bijou there were pictures of Freddie on the screen that we couldn't see from our positions.
Then came more hits, but also new songs, including We Believe, which was great live. Another tear. I really hoped to hear Warboys, but perhaps later on this tour. They didn't play Hammer To Fall, though. The Show Must Go On was played just before Bohemian Rhapsody. Paul completely lost the lyrics of The Show Must Go On, sang part of the first verse in the second and missed some intervals. Luckily for him then the solo came and after it he could sing further.
After the Bohemian Rhapsody there was a short pause, after which the band played the whole Cosmos Rockin', All Right Now, We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. During We Will Rock You Brian looked a bit tired of playing the same song again, but it could well be that I was tired from the concert which lasted for more than two hours by then. And I am not 60!
