Guilty pleasure music

Do you have any guilty pleasure favourites?



I have one big guilty pleasure favourite band: Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi was one of the first bands that I ever liked because I loved the big choruses and the irresistible hooks in their songs. Since then my musical tastes have changed and most of the music I listen to is very far from Bon Jovi (I'm probably the only person in the world who likes both Radiohead and BJ), but this band has kind of stuck with me. I'm not a huge Bon Jovi fan and I don't like any of their new stuff at all, but I still like their albums from the late 1980s and 1990s. The problem is, it's hardly fashionable to like this band and they have never exactly been the critic's choice if you know what I mean. We know the deal with this band: they are an extremely slick and commercial band that makes bland, middle of the road songs and making money has always been more important to them than making music. Their lyrics are not very deep (to put it nicely), they always do the same songs over and over again, they love to pose in photographs and show their unnaturally white teeth. The band's image is terrible and their audience mostly consists of 40-year-old women ("soccer moms") who stare at Jon Bon Jovi's butt while their husband is at work. I can't watch live bootlegs of this band because I can't stand the sight of this guy making huge smiles and wiggling his ass to the women. This is all bad stuff and it's not hard to understand why they have never had any respect from critics and fellow musicians. And all this makes it very hard for me to accept that I still like (some of) their music. I'm often on the verge of taking all of their albums to a second-hand music shop but then I put in the stereo some old song of theirs that I always liked, like "I Believe", "Someday I'll Be Saturday Night" or "Something For The Pain", and I realise that I still honestly like those songs. Yeah, Bon Jovi music is clichéd and shallow, but at their best times their songs were inspired and genuine to them, and "Bad Medicine" is still a fun, brainless rock song and some songs like "Bitter Wine" or "These Days" are surprisingly beautiful. So I say fuck 'em all. I mean, I'd be a real coward if I rejected some band that I like simply because I "shouldn't" like them, and decided my music favourites solely based on what critics and other music fans like, right? So Bon Jovi continues to be my secret love... I'll never admit in public that I like them, but once or twice a year I listen to an old Jovi album to get that guilty pleasure.

Ah, I love this topic. :-)) Thanks for opening the thread. It's happened to me so many times, and it still happens. I have a similar situation with a lot of bands, some of which it would be really embarrassing to mention. I have lost count of how many lonely nights I spent as a teenager listening to Bon Jovi's "In These Arms" on the discman while letting myself fall into a deep, platonic and romantic sleep. :)))

There's one by Mick Jagger I listen to up until today: the song is so ridiculously catchy and the lyrics are so absolutely and deliciously lame that I couldn't avoid being hooked on it: it's called "Throwaway". 

Lo and behold! It's more embarrassing than Bon Jovi could ever get - it's all so lame and deliciously ridiculous. And catchy! The lyrics are priceless:

Joan Jett & The Black Hearts, Dio, Quiet Riot, Poison, and Whitesnake

why would dio be a guilty pleasure? he's considered one of the best metal singers ever and for a good reason. who else can say he (or she) made 3 classic albums with 3 differents bands like dio did with rainbow (rising), sabbath (heaven and hell) and his band dio (holy diver). no one should put dio in the guilty pleasure music, he's nothing like bon jovi (i like some songs), ratt, poison, cinderella or other shit hair metal bands

I don't have any 'guilty pleasure' music. If I like something, I like it. No need to feel guilty about it.

True! Dio is a fucking legend...and don't group Bon Jovi with the hair metal bands... it's an insult to them. :P

Well, I like Dio, but not many around my area seem to. However, they don't even like my non-guilty pleasure music so I guess you guys have good points.Ah, fuckin' mainstream music these days. Indeed Dio is not a guilty pleasure at all. I saw the guy on his Holy Diver tour all those years ago. He was superb then as he is now.

And the same with me. My mates used to find it funny how I could go from ABBA to Queen to Toyah to Bing Crosby to The Nolans and Thin Lizzy usually one after the other. Its simple really. I like what I like and I couldnt care less what anybody else thinks about that.

You guys have pretty much said all I wanted to say. I love 80's rock and metal bands like Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Dokken etc, but I don't feel guilty about it. I do however also have a small liking for Catherdal choir music which I'm not so fond of letting everyone know I like.

Yeah I do. Among my favourite genres of music, shred guitar is definitely up there! Even though he's mostly known for his blinding speed, I think people should give his more ballad-type stuff a listen - there's some really good songs there. :P
