Ah, I love this topic. :-)) Thanks for opening the thread. It's happened to me so many times, and it still happens. I have a similar situation with a lot of bands, some of which it would be really embarrassing to mention. I have lost count of how many lonely nights I spent as a teenager listening to Bon Jovi's "In These Arms" on the discman while letting myself fall into a deep, platonic and romantic sleep. :)))
"Baby I want yooou, like the roses want the rain".
There's one by Mick Jagger I listen to up until today: the song is so ridiculously catchy and the lyrics are so absolutely and deliciously lame that I couldn't avoid being hooked on it: it's called "Throwaway".
Lo and behold! It's more embarrassing than Bon Jovi could ever get - it's all so lame and deliciously ridiculous. And catchy! The lyrics are priceless:
"I used to play the Casanova, faster than a roller coster..." Hahaha.
Hug,
Yara

I don't have any 'guilty pleasure' music. If I like something, I like it. No need to feel guilty about it.

I wish it was that simple. I always feel that I'm not a "real" music fan because I like Bon Jovi. It's even more embarrassing because I'm a guy and this band has all those sappy, syrupy power ballads which men shouldn't like at all. Bon Jovi is my dark secret.

why would dio be a guilty pleasure? he's considered one of the best metal singers ever and for a good reason. who else can say he (or she) made 3 classic albums with 3 differents bands like dio did with rainbow (rising), sabbath (heaven and hell) and his band dio (holy diver). no one should put dio in the guilty pleasure music, he's nothing like bon jovi (i like some songs), ratt, poison, cinderella or other shit hair metal bands

True! Dio is a fucking legend...and don't group Bon Jovi with the hair metal bands... it's an insult to them. :P

Insult to Bon Jovi or insult to hair metal bands?
And yeah, I also don't think Dio is guilty pleasure.

People should be on their knees wishing they were half as great as Dio....
Bon Jovi on the other hand, would better serve mankind if he were sent to Pluto forever.

Lost Highway? Do us a favour and stay lost, Mister Jovi...
I don't have that album as I can't stand any recent BJ albums, but I've heard the song Lost Highway and it's one of the worst songs ever made by anyone... it's so bad it isn't even funny anymore, it's just utterly unlistenable garbage. Of course most people would say that about all Bon Jovi songs, but I still like the old ones.

Indeed; to be entirely truthful I really don't know any of his old stuff. I know that hearing Lost Highway too many times at my favourite restaurant has made me not want to really know any of his catalogue at all... Guilty pleasure music? Hank Snow and Hank Williams. For those of you under 40 years of age, they are c&w singers.

That's a bit strange because Bon Jovi practically defines hair metal. It would be very unusual if someone likes hair metal in general but not Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi is not and never were hair metal. They were just a sleazy hard rock band. I goddamn hate Motley Crue, RATT, Poison, etc. and all those other shit bands of the '80s. They weren't metal either, but MUCH closer to metal than Bon Jovi. Bon Jovi are quite anti-metal, if you ask me. Few people considered Bon Jovi metal even in the 80's.
What do you guys think of W.A.S.P.? They were an 80's plain old heavy metal band often mistaken for hair metal. That's partially their fault since they look ridiculous with the glam-influenced make-up and stage outfits. They're big among metal buffs in India but I think they're shit. They rave about the (racist) lead singer Blackie Lawless having a fantastic voice and inhuman vocal range but I don't see it.

Hair metal was not "real" metal, everybody knows that. At the same time when hair bands were popular death metal was being born and thrash bands were on the rise, and the people who listened to Death and Slayer and Obituary definitely didn't listen to Bon Jovi. Hair metal or pop metal or glam metal, all of which are names for the same music style, was pop (/rock) music really. I guess people just thought that hair metal sounds better than "hair rock" or something, and the glam rock of the early 1970s was not to be confused with the new "glam" music of the 80s. Bon Jovi fits perfectly to the hair metal music genre along with Whitesnake, Cinderella, Poison, Def Leppard, Motley Crue and others, but that doesn't mean that I think that Bon Jovi is actually METAL music. Bon Jovi themselves have never called their music metal, whenever they have been asked what genre the music is they have said that it's just rock music. I personally don't hate any band but there are of course many bands that I don't listen to and don't care about (all the 80s' hair bands except Bon Jovi among them).

twisted sister is/was considered glam/hair metal but if you listen to their music they are more like judas priest than ratt/poison/motley crue and all those bands. they really aren't hair metal and people think they are because of their cartoony image and all the make up. but music is what counts and they are really good hard rock band (more than metal) and because of their image people doesn't take them seriously and give them a chance. the same thing happened to queen in the 70's. they were always very visual in presenting themselves so people thought there were no musical substance. it's stupid and only happened because Q and TS put much into their appereance as well as into their music. don't judge the book by its covers
