[/b]Hi dear Anthony !
Damn, the recording is really excellent.
The show in itself is a standard show, I mean as it is the end of the tour we have already heard that music played live before, but there are some small new interesting things here and there (as already said, for instance, the transition from Somebody To Love to Killer Queen with a jam and a bit of My Fairy King is a delight !).
The band is in great shape, Freddie's voice is much better than it was at the start of their South African venture (as the story says), and the other members are enjoying their concert as much as the audience. Freddie is in form, Brian May too, and Roger and John have always been excellent in the rythmic section. Except the few false notes, Brian before the solo in Killer Queen (which is very a surprise for me, I always thought he would play this one all his life without ever missing a note !) and Freddie at the piano during the intro of Seven Seas Of Rhye, this is just an excellent performance as (almost) always.
As far as the recording, I'm used to hear audience recordings, as there aren't that many soundboards exist for Queen, not as sme other bands (mainly the FM broadcasts and things like that, they were very protective of their recordings ! ), and some of these audience tapes have too much audience noise. Here I think we have the complete contrary, the audience is not heard that much (in fact only from the stage mikes I think), so it misses this part of the mood of a concert. But we have the great opportunity to hear each instrument in a full clear sound, which is very interesting of course ! The few false notes also contribute to the fact that we know we hear a real band on a real stage, without any overdubs, the real thing as if you were in the hall, in the middle of the crowd but you're alone, with your headphones on, connected to the soundboard... Can you see Freddie waving his arm down during "Hammer To Fall" ? or scatting for the intro of "It's A Hard Life", just before he takes control of the audience once again ? I would be curious to know how many people were in the audience on this night and during the other nights, it was probably at full capacity anyway (imagine, Queen playnig in South Africa ?). This is a very instructive recording, and a very nice experience, I won't say it is the only recording to give me the thrill, as I much prefer Queen in the 70's. But that would easily be in the top 10 recordings I think. Have they played their acoustic set in South Africa ? Is This The World We Created and Love Of My Life should be really interesting to hear !
Why that soundboard has been liberated ? I think the band came to play in another country, another continent, maybe they didn't knew the promoters as much as the European or American ones, they could not force them to have much more control around the stage and recording equipment, I don't know; can anybody tell me what other similar Queen soundboard (else than a radio or video broadcast) exist ? Except a very few ones maybe (Ken Testi's tape for instance), I don't think there are that many soundboard recordings. In South Africa we were lucky the technicians were much more relaxed with that control on the recordings, and most probably the recordings of the other nights exist (why doing that for one show when theu could have done that for the other nights too ?). This is also confirmed by Marknow who said he once was offered to buy 5 recordings of Queen in South Africa, but didn't buy them (holy sh.... !!). Well, this is just what I think, it would be very interesting to read more comments about that. I would be really interested too to hear Freddie's goodbye on the last night, really !
As far as the historical content, I'm more than happy that after venturing in South America, they played in South Africa and made some more people happy with music. No political aspect for me, just music as it is, a vehicle for joy and entertainment. And something to help people opening his mind. Two years after there were plans during the Magic Tour to go further into the Eastern European countries if I'm right. God knows what would have become Queen's itinerary in the 90's or at the start of the 2000's, as it is now more common to see bands playing there. Queen in Northern Africa, Vietnam, India ? Who knows... But it is all nothing but good I think.
For every Queen fan I think, it is always a ball to have a new proof of Freddie's power and the reign of Queen as a band. They were just on the verge of playing in Rio the following year, the year when they proved they weren't dead, after some lower years. This is a new one, and a real good one. thanks a lot dear Anthony for bringing that one here !
"The more noise you gonna make the better we gonna play !" Ah !! Typical Freddie, always showing he is at ease !!!

Aouch !! Bloody stealer !!! ;o) Ah Ah !
I correct one thing : I don't think, I'm SURE this recording is in the Top 10 !!
And about Ken Testi's tape, it is not a soundboard, but an audience tape, I was totally wrong !

Thanks, really generous of you! :)
Roger has a terrible and I mean really terrible drum sound. The snare sounds like he hits a can of cat food.

Marvellous, Anthony!
This is one of the greatest uploads Queenzone has ever witnessed!
Thank you VERY VERY much for this incredible piece of Queen history!!
After over two decades of collecting and trading, I had totally lost all interest in hearing any more (audience) audio recordings. But THIS is an example of something that actually DOES still get my blood boiling!
Eternal gratitude for coming over here to share this unheard gem with us.

This is indeed the best upload ever on QZ. We're very lucky the band decided to play a great gig on this date:-) I was actually really surprised to hear the power and energy and creativity with which they played. There are several little moments that make true Queen fans jump out of their seats!
