Funny thing is that Metallica did that crappy production on purpose.  They wanted a completely raw, live peformance in the studio (if you want to call the facility they used a studio) without any polishing.  To an extent, I actually liked the sound.

AC/DC's Fly on the Wall album sounds like it was recorded in someone's garage.

Kiss appear in a lot of "worst" lists, as well as "most over-rated", "cheesiest songs", "dumbest lyrics" etc.

They have a well-deserved reputation for being crappy at almost everything.
Gene Simmons does have a nice guitar though.

Bowie's Tonight album has some diabolical production on it.

This is really more a matter of taste, but the job Phil Spector did on Let it Be has always bugged me.

I hope he doesn't see your comment: he has a bit of a temper.

(it was rumoured that after hearing Fred's version of Going back, Spector hired an assassin to hunt down Fred and teach him "a fatal, final lesson he'll never forget". Fortunately, the assassin's name was Barry Bulsara). True story.

I never was a fan of Jimmy Page's horendous work behind the board. Clearly a case where the remasters sound so much better than the originals.

For Zebonka:

RE: Let It Be

Phil Spector was enlisted in early 1970 to do some post-production mixing and overdubs, but he did NOT work with the band as a unit.  And, although his use of strings has generated much criticism, by and large he left the original performances to stand as is.  Only "The Long And Winding Road" and (to a lesser degree) "Across The Universe" and "I Me Mine" get the Wall Of Sound treatment.

In November 2003, The Beatles released Let It Be... Naked, which mixed out Spector's contributions and deleted snippets of conversation scattered throughout the album.

Ha it's funny you should go to the effort of clarifying because "Long and Winding Road" was the song that annoyed me the most!  Ha-ha.
I liked the concept that they had for the Get Back/Let it Be thing, but I don't think it worked in execution.  It was really something that should've been done by a band looking to survive a 2nd decade - not one that was crumbling to bits.  That's what's always annoyed me the most about Let it Be (and to a lesser extent, the White Album).  They still had top material to offer, but the recordings fell so short of their standards.
If you hate the Spector version of Let It Be, get Let It Be... Naked. Its the original Glyn Johns version. Extremely better in every way shape and form. It even became my fave Beatles album for awhile!

The Led Zeppelin albums, They sound like they were all recorded in a camper or a toolshed or something

Memory Almost Full was the first thing Macca's done that I've liked in God knows how long ...
but CHRIST someone needs to take his compression away, at least for a few weeks while he sorts out his addiction.

Wow are you serious. I thought MAF was a really terrible production. The overal compression is horrible! And there is no excuse for the amount of noise on that album. Listen to End of the End, and note the amount of noise that comes in 2 seconds before the vocals. There´s no excuse for that.

It all sounds horrible squashed, there´s absolutely no life in the music at all.

Chaos & Creation was also bad, but this is even worse!

When the album got out I got the album in mp3 from a friend, and I thought he just sent me very bad quality mp3's. 128 kbits or something. But no, it was just the sound of the album..

McCartney is really losing i, if he thinks this is how music should sound
