Here's a quick mix I did of Fat Bottomed Girls, highlighting the unheard vocal and guitar bits.
What a fun evening it was going through this. It was like reacquainting with an old friend.

nice details breakdown. for what started as a simple jam session, there's a lot going on there. guess once they got into the feel of the song, the ideas just spilled out.
there's one or two bits i'd have liked in the final mix.

Nice effort

Quite nice to hear Brian multitracking his BVs on one of the guitar tracks in FBG. I think (tohugh I might be wrong) one or more of the drum fills could be looped so they play twice in the finished version of the song- listening to the drum tracks, it sounds like things heard twice in the end product are played once in the recording, though I might be being a bit thick.
Interesting to notice that the lead vocals switch from the first take to the second for the ad libs at the end. Seemingly immediately after the final chorus.

Yep, two drum fills.
There are two different room mic tracks, one of which has the alternate drum takes that end up on the final version. Who knows which tapes the final drum takes comes from, because they aren't here.

It sounds to me the Under Pressure tape might have been some sort of backup copy and most certainly not the tape used to make the final mix, most evidenced by the audible print thru effect on all of the tracks in the first few seconds.

Sorry for another clueless question (but I am learning so much from you guys on this!), is there a way to separate out individual voices on harmonies? Are the backing harmonies all on one track, or somehow individually pulled out? I ask, because I listen to the songs so closely to follow each voice in the harmony, and I find it almost impossible to identify Brian’s contribution in them. There are some where I can, but I’d love to hear them by themselves (not on UP so much, but Queen songs in general). It’s usually easy to tell Freddie and Roger, especially in the higher parts, because of the more unique sound of their voices. Brian’s is usually lower and it just blends, I guess. Seeing videos where they all sing harmonies at the same time makes me think you can’t pull out individuals, but thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask!

Not unless specific vocals are panned hard, right or middle. You can't "unmix" a stereo mix, although the day is nearing when that will be possible as well. Doing the harmonies at the same time was mostly for show though, especially on later albums they had enough tracks at their disposal to sing their lines one by one. These tracks were then submixed into one stereo track and subsequently reused, which is why we hardly ever get individual backing vocals in the multitracks.

One more thing about FBG. There's a third vocal take - possibly a guide vocal leaking on kick 1 + 2. Which aren't kick tracks. They sound like timp overdubs for the guitar passages at the start of the song?
cmi · Member since
Yes, they are floor toms overdubbed later. And you right about third (possibly earliest) vocal take.
