Muse concert

This will be kind of written like a review, so forgive the critic-style of language..

I saw Muse on Monday night.  This is my second time seeing them, the first time being back in 2006 at a warehouse-type place that holds about 2000.  This time they're doing the arenas.  Point blank, it was absolutely the best arena rock show I have ever seen, and I've seen dozens of them.  While the visuals (outstanding as they were) may be no better than U2, Coldplay, or Green Day, Muse are more musically interesting than all three put together.

The visuals never dared to (and didn't need to) overcompensate for a lack of musical depth to keep the audience interested.  They merely augmented the excitement on stage.  They could have played under three lights and the end product would still have been just as good.  But they chose to make their show a theatrical experience.  The only downfall to orchestrating a show as such is that it erodes away some of the spontaneity factor, but they get so many things right that you really couldn't care less.

The trio, along with their auxiliary keyboardist, are all fine instrumentalists, and by far the most musical-sounding rock band today.  They are one of the very few bands in the mainstream to combine the accessibility of the pop hook with learned musicality.  No integrity is compromised on the record or on stage.  With many instrumental segments between songs, they showed that they can do more than recreate their records on stage (which is a feat in itself).

With the combined impact of the quality of songs, visuals, continuity, and theatricality, this is the closest I've come to experiencing something like people have described a Queen show would have been.  I can only regret not being old enough to be able to draw the direct comparison myself.  The intro of the show had the audience breathless before the band had played a note, just like the intro of a Queen show.  Having been to a plethora of concerts, I had never experienced that in my life until two days ago.

The fact that it took Muse five records to make it to the arenas means they have slowly built their audience and reputation, which works out for the artist in the long run.  Starting at the top only means your only destination is down.  They have earned their way to super-stardom, and will be around for a very, very long time.

My sister called me today and told me just that.  I've got her a tad obsessed. ;-)

We saw them a couple of weeks ago, and it was easily one of the best shows I've ever been to.  We also saw them open for U2 last year.  They were the reason we went, actually..  After seeing that short set, I was beyond excited to see a real show.  I knew they would be awesome live, but the stage setup and lights were even better than I had anticipated.  The only problem is I'm desperate to see them again now! :-)

I saw them in November and it was an amazing concert. It's certainly no coincidence that so many of my Queen friends are into Muse now. An intelligent band who is highly original. The only little downside of the concert was that so much of the sound was not created on the stage like backing vocals and additional keyboards (we could not even see the additional keyboarder) but the great sound made up for this.

Here is the very amusing Muse appearance on Italian TV where they were forced to mime to a tape. Nobody noticed that the singer played the drums, the drummer pretended to sing and played a left-handed bass while the bass player played guitar and keyboards.

The keyboardist is on stage.  He's usually not under the lights, but you see him now and again.  But you're right, it's a bit disappointing that they don't rearrange the songs in some way instead of feeling the need to use vocals on tape.  With that and the visuals in mind, I guess most (if not all) of the songs are played to a click (in their ears) so that everything remains in time.  But it's one very small blemish on an otherwise excellent show they put on.

The Italian TV video is simply brilliant.  I saw that a while back, and laughed my ass off.  "Our drummer Matt..."  Ha ha!

Two questions:

1. Are they still closing with Knights of Cydonia? If so, I fear the song may be permanently locked into that spot in the set.

2. Did they add pyrotechnics to their set with the move to arena tours? I've always had a soft spot for bands like Muse, U2 and (to a lesser extent) the Foo Fighters, bands which create stunning visual effects without making things go boom every other song.

Muse are quite good and i hope they keep it together would like to see how they grow and mature as a top notch band...kinda llike you know who did so many years ago
