We Will Rock you Musical....

I've seen lots of comments from some people on here saying they hate it and it ruined Queen & how its a load of shit ect....

This is'nt a thing saying it's wrong to hate it btw oh no! Everyone can have their own opinion but I just wonder [b]why[/b] do some of you guys hate it? Whats your actuall reasons for disliking it?

I don't think it ruined Queen or their music. Maybe their reputation, though. I just find it all childish, stupid, and too business oriented. It's like, do Queen REALLY need a musical to remind people of their songs? Apparently Brian, Roger, and  Ben Elton do. I dislike Brian's quotes of "Freddie's spirit is there! I can feel it! He's there"... what a load of bullshit.

I liked it, went to see it a few months back and loved every second.  Yes its childish, yes its not Queen, yes its embarrassing on one level, yes its a bit overdone and all... but i loved every single moment.  Didnt 'ruin Queen.'   It is not Queen, and if u go expecting it to be Queen u will be disappointed, but if u go expecting to have a good laugh, and enjoy songs u love in the process with a completely different take... then go!

Your right its not Queen The story was absoloutley crazy yet the songs still fitted! It was indeed a great laugh I loved it xD I also agreed with the  simon cowell thing and how real music is no more...it might be like that one day...:-O!
I saw it as a tribute to Queen & Freddie myself :)

& blue roses I agree with you Queen don't really need a musical for people to remeber their songs

I have only had the opportunity to watch the musical by downloading it from this forum. It was not the best qulaity video-wise, but I did enjoy it. I took it as a fun musical with a fun story and Queen music used in a fun way. I am sure Freddie would have been in support absolutely.
But I think different people approach such things in different ways, depending on what Queen's music means to them. Many people like listening to Hotspace (including me) and so many people hated the very concept of Queen + Paul Rodgers project (including me).

I'm not a fan, but I don't think anything less of Brian or Roger.

Robert DeNiro has a lot to answer for, though!!!  Maybe this is why Scorsese replaced him with DiCaprio.  Bobby's clearly lost it!!!

I've seen it six times.

I dislike it because:

1. It claims to tell a story but the "plot" is vacuous
2. The songs are linked by some very weak (and, from what I saw, very old) Ben Elton jokes.  These are not performed by a comedian.
3. Lyrics are changed to accommodate the "plot"
4. It seems to divert all of Brian's creative energy (at least for a while) to the detriment of him doing anything interesting.
5. It is plugged on all official releases, when it should be pushing the original catalogue.
6. I don't like karaoke.  Good as the singers presumably are, the constant rotation of "lead singers" would grate.  I'd rather watch a tribute band (and I'm no particular fan of them either) - the difference seems fairly minimal to me (except to the wallet, of course).

Oh, and yes, I'm sure Freddie would have loved it, but there were plenty of things he liked that I wouldn't, so I see no obligation to support this.  I'm equally sure Freddie would have accepted that.

Yes. Especially 4-6.  Thanks for articulating that so well.

I saw it when I was in Stuttgart. The synopsis was a little - scratch that - [i]very[/i] cheesy, cliché, and unoriginal, but then again, it seems pretty obvious that the musical wasn't written and released for its brilliant, groundbreaking plot, its gut-bustingly hilarious punchlines or the exceptionally creative names of the characters, but for the music. The background band was pretty damn good, at least at the production I went to, as were the singers (especially the woman who played the "Killer Queen"). I really enjoyed that aspect of the show. I know a lot of Queen fans probably think WWRY is a festering slice of road pizza but at the very least it makes an attempt at bringing the music of Queen to a younger generation, as well as something potentially new and exciting for fans who were never able to experience Queen live - the same thing that Q + PR did, really, at least in my opinion.

De Niro is 91 now. He still says "Are you talking to me?" a lot, but only because he wears a hearing aid.

I haven't seen it, but I have heard some of the gags that are made during the show.  Perhaps I'm just being told the worst ones?  I really like to believe that the Ben Elton who wrote some of my favourite TV episodes was replaced by an asshole.

It's an interesting thing.

Coming from a musical point of view, it's a terrible musical.  An unoriginal rehash of songs. The plot appears to be loosely strung around the songs, the humour in it is embarrassingly childish and it really shouldn't work, and I am disappointed that the general public seem to think it does. As a Queen fan, I cringe as I watch it. It's the prime example of why fans of theatre are losing faith in modern musical theatre. A blatant cash in, with no new material. Lazy, empty and feel good. I admit though I have enjoyed it the last couple of times I've seen it, but that mayhve been simply because one of my favourite west end performers currenty understudies two of the main roles and he is just amazing.

It pains me though, because while it's hard to believe, musicals with no original songs can actually work. It's very hard to get right. Mamma Mia didn't manage it, neither did WWRY, but Jersey Boys manages it amazingly. It's a biopic, as opposed to a terrible story with cheesey songs added. Yes, there are moments when the songs are used as cheesey plot devices but it's one of the best new musicals around. And to think, Brian and Roger could have got something like that. A story of how the band got together, their success and Freddie's death, if it was done properly it could have been beautifully touching and you would have come out having learnt about the band and feeling touched by Freddie's life.

But no, we got WWRY.
