I always miss the harmonies when they played live. Roger would try to sing them (Brian would too but more often Roger), but it rarely sounded even close to the studio version.

And the opening bit when the rest of the instruments start up is my favorite part of the song (especially when played live - that's part of the reason why I think the live version is this song is so awesome!)

Absolutely. The second side was pretty disappointing (Sail Away Sweet Sister aside), so to have the album end with a masterpiece like Save Me rescued the album for me.

The first side is flawless to me. not a bad song on it.  the second side has the decent prime jive, though I'm not crazy about new wave.  The weakest song from freddie up to that point don't try suicide and roger's weak coming soon, so yea Save me saved the second side to that album.  Along with sail away sweet sister.

One of Queens best love balleds. Sadly you don't hear much of it so unless your not a Queen fan you prob would of never heard of it.
To me its a classic love balled n it should get more credit than it deserves

god i am going to be burned at the stake as a heretic. but i really don't get "save me" at all -
Brian's songwriting was not that varied...his songwriting generally fell into one of three categories:-

standard rocker:    TYMD, hammer,
folky:  leaving home, 39, some day one day
formulaic ballad:  TMLWKY, save me

with the exception of It's Late and Doing Alright, i dont like his songs too much

Interesting as I love him (he's my second favourite Queen song-writer after Freddie), and those two songs (particularly Doing Alright) are among my least favourite May songs. :D

Everyone's opinion is different obviously, but i think a day at the races was the only queen album without one dud.  Even opera has one with sweet lady and Queen2 with loser in the end.  SHA with she makes me.   The game has a few of them.  Still tremendous albums BTW.

I'm not sure that I agree. While I do agree that almost every Queen album has a dud (or at least a song that is far lesser than some of the other songs on the album, even thought it may not be a bad song), I don't know if ADATR is an exception. The reason I'm not sure is that it's been years since I've listened to it in full, and there are a full songs I've barely listened to (such as White Man and Long Away.) I will say though that I think that the four Mercury songs, You and I, TYMD and Teo Torrette are all terrific (to varying degrees), I don't know if I'm such a fan of Drowse (Roger during the 70's was hit and miss, and mostly miss for me), and I need to relisten to White Man and Long Away.

yea, maybe Drowse is only ok. roger was hit or miss for me too.  The first album was pretty consistent for me, but the second side is a little weaker than the first.  Dud is the wrong word....Unless we're talking about fun it or something.
