I do give Augeri the most credit out of all the Perry replacements: He brought his own song-writing into the mix and brought a nice new sound to "update" Journey's sound. If Neal Schon didn't over-tour the guy, he would probably still be in Journey. JSS was good, but he lacked range for most of Journey's songs (they were written for a countertenor--Steve Perry), and the Drummer, Deen Castronovo "helped out" by either singing the top notes (like the whole Freddie/Roger thing), or he would sing whole songs (like Mother Father). Arnel (the latest singer), has great energy and stage presence, but sorry--his live pitch is awful.
The only real criticism I have of Augeri, was that after 2002/3, he started using "backing tracks," but then again, Neal's fault.

Micrówave wrote: Oh my God, Skip. I think you're the only person on the planet to feel that way, considering Augeri only sung about an album & a half worth of material. Unfortunately he didn't survive too long. By the way, when you saw him in concert, they were tracking vocals (unless you saw the Vegas show). That was the reason for his dismissal. It was really digging on Schon.
So you're throwing out the Infinity, Evolution, Departure, 2 tracks from Dream After Dream, Escape, Street Talk, Frontiers, the Tron Soundtrack song, Raised On Radio, and Trial By Fire for the shitty songs on Arrival (most weren't even written by the band), 6 songs from Generations and two tracks from the Red album which couldn't even interest a record company?
Ok.
Steve Augeri was in Journey for around 9 years. He sang on two studio cds ("Arrival" and "Generations"), one studio e.p. ("Red 13"), "Remember Me" (from the "Armageddon" soundtrack), plus a few other b-sides/import tracks. I wouldn't doubt that he played more shows than Perry did.
No, they weren't using tracking vocals on every tour that he was involved with. You need to be better informed before making your statements.
Perry used to be good, but that ended due to his alcoholism and cocaine usage. The guy's voice is toast and has been since "Frontiers."
Augeri was dismissed from Journey because Schon is a f*cking coke-headed, alcoholic asshole. Cain is just as bad. Augeri had a major throat infection which involved him taking some time off to recover. But the two aholes booked another tour (something like the 6th or 7th tour in a row since Augeri started). They had told him they weren't going to tour that particular summer, then changed their minds when LiveNation came calling.
The bottom line is Schon hates Journey (because they have to play the Perry material) and it eats away at him that the only way he's going to make money is by playing the same 12 Perry songs over and over again.
When they were recording "Generations" he recorded his parts then left. All he was interested in doing was that shit project called Soul SirkUS. The record company didn't back him up, the cd flopped, and that just pissed him off. Back to Journey to pay for the alimony he owed his 4 or 5 ex-wives.
Journey "Arrival"
1. "Higher Place" Jack Blades, Neal Schon 2. "All the Way" Schon, Jonathan Cain, Michael Rhodes, Steve Augeri 3. "Signs of Life" Schon, J. Cain, Elizabeth Cain 4. "All the Things" Schon, Cain, Andre Pessis 5. "Loved By You" Cain, Tammy Hyler, Tribble 6. "Livin' to Do" Schon, Matt Schon, Cain, Tribble 7. "World Gone Wild" Blades, Schon, Cain 8. "I Got a Reason" Blades, Schon, Cain 9. "With Your Love" Schon, J. Cain, E. Cain 10. "Lifetime of Dreams" Schon, Cain, Tribble 11. "Live and Breathe" Schon, Cain, Augeri 12. "Nothin' Comes Close" Schon, Cain, Augeri 13. "To Be Alive Again" Cain, Augeri, Tribble, Eric Bazilian 14. "Kiss Me Softly" Blades, Schon, Augeri 15. "We Will Meet Again" Schon, Augeri, Tribble
Schon, Cain, and/or Augeri co-wrote every track.
It's evident you don't know what you're talking about.
"Raised On Radio" and "Trial By Fire" suck. They're nothing more than Steve Perry solo lps.

8) Journey (Perry and Augeri eras; prefer Augeri)
I hope you were trying to be funny, Skip.
Nope. Most of the Augeri material was heavier than the Perry material.
Plus, Perry's voice sucked post "Frontiers." I prefer Augeri's rock voice
over Perry's croning voice. Saw both in concert and Augeri wins.
"Perry's voice sucked post Frontiers."
WTF kind of comment is that?
Sucked as in you can no longer sing. Your voice sounds like shit. Your vocals are processed to hell
in the studio because you can't cut it anymore. In concert you need to lower the key to the songs
because you can't hit the high notes anymore. Your once smooth voice now sounds like you
gargle with razor blades each morning.
Perry really knew how to take care of his voice.

Perry's been spitting blood for decades now. His vocal chords are just shreds now. Perry was flying his entire time in Journey. Cocaine will do that to you.

"WTF kind of comment is that?"
The kind of comment made by someone who worships Kiss, thus illustrating his tastes in singers.
Paul Stanley's still out there rocking.
Perry. Nope. No career since "Trial By Fire."
Mercury. Nope. Dead because he was too fucked up on drugs to have the common sense to use a rubber when he trolled for men.
Three of my favorite singers and the best one survived. Sorry that the truth hurts your feelings.

That's like saying "Oh, since 1984--Freddie's voice sucked!" (the cigarettes).
I may have not have seen Perry live (born in 1990), but I own plenty of Journey bootlegs, and I can tell you: Steve Perry is probably the best LIVE singer ever! The guy RARELY flubbed a note live--and if he did, he fixed it!
You never saw Perry live. I did.
You're done.

Totally spot on, Gregsynth. I saw them live four times, all with Perry. Never a bad note. Not one. And to sing that range, which at times was much higher in pitch than say Freddie or Robert Palmer, for that many years? Incredible. Journey is on their third singer in the last ten years since Perry left. And the rumour is, they're looking for #4.
But let's give ol' Steve Augeri his due. Look at this catalog of material he's graced us with: Higher Place All The Way Signs Of Life Faith In The Heartland State Of Grace
Maybe Skip just needs a better set of speakers or something.
Again you're talking out of your ass.
Journey is completing their next studio with Kevin Shirley producing again.
BTW, Rober Palmer??? I think you mean Robert Plant.
LOL
I'll take all of those Augeri era tracks over the Perry shit found on "Raised On Radio" and "Trial By Fire."
Go listen to the Bill Graham memorial concert to see just how badly Perry's voice was. He had to tune down the instruments a step and a half and he still couldn't reach the notes.
Then you have this:

Just sad.

Try these, Skip...
Raised on Radio tracks that are better than anything since Perry left:
*Girl Can't Help It *Suzanne *Be Good To Yourself I'll Be Alright Without You It Could Have Been You
Trial By Fire tracks that are better than anything since Perry left: *Message Of Love Still She Cries (This is a really, really good track) Colors Of The Spirit Trial By Fire Track 15, the unnamed "hidden" track
*All these songs charted on Billboard. None of Augeri's did.

Hey Skip, were you not LISTENING? I said I OWN BOOTLEGS of Journey (Steve Perry era). That's pretty much equal to YOU seeing them live back in the 1980s. Steve didn't wreck his voice through drugs/alcohol either (totally false statement there), it was the constant DEMAND on his voice from singing all those ball-busting high notes. When you abuse your voice, you develop vocal nodules. He damaged his voice on the US leg of the Frontiers tour (got nodes), then the abusive singing from 1984-1987 (listen to the ROR bootlegs for the best idea), sealed the deal. His voice did recover (to an extent) for his FTLOSM album and tour during 1994-1995.
Again, abusive singing and overtouring wrecked Steve's voice. Not drugs.

Why are we even talking about this?

Kiss is not a band, it is a stage show...it is not even meant for the music so how can you call it a band
