[QUOTE][QUOTENAME]The_CrY wrote:[/QUOTENAME] I can understand that opinions differ, but when handing out 1/10 as if they were hot dogs is just unbelievable. I mean, 1/10 would mean the song is absolute shit... A Winter's Tale isn't absolute shit, is it? How about 5/10 if you are not too fond of a song?

[not trying to make you change your ratings, I'm just a little surprised, that's all] [/QUOTE]

Well, I simply don't like it :-) I don't like boring songs, and Winter's Tale is simply too boring for me (just like both versions of Beautiful Day), but it doesn't mean that other people can't rate it as 10/10 :-)

It's a Beautiful Day - 7/10 - very emotional vocal work but as a song ok
Made In Heaven - 9/10 - I like this far better than the empty version of Freddie
Let Me Live - 9/10 - absolutely love this, Roger did his best vocal work in this song IMO, good piano work by Freddie!
Mother Love - 7/10 - it's ok
My Life Has Been Saved - 7/10 - it's ok
I Was Born to Love You - 10/10 - fantastic rocker song! one of the best songs by Queen!!!
Heaven For Everyone - 8/10 - nice parts but occasionally boring
Too Much Love Will Kill You - 8/10 - i like it
You Don't Fool Me - 6/10 - boring and repetitive, but indeed a very nice guitar solo
A Winter's Tale - 9/10 - this song is so beautiful, love the chorus: "dreamin...."
It's Beautiful Day (Reprise) - 6/10 - a nice idea but too repetitive
Yeah - 10/10 - absolute greatest of the best of the best
Untitled Track - 4/10 - some parts are nice to listen to but as a whole very boring song, not for my taste

i think most queen fans like MIH because of the sentimnent behind it: "let the fans hear something of Freddie one last time".
Personally, I liked it but it was not very good. I think there were some "doffed caps" towards the old days....the "beautiful day" and "reprise" harks back to sheer heart attack not only from the "and reprise" idea, that one is melodic and basically freddie exercising his vocal chords, while the other is what would amount to an end of concert rock-out. listen to lap of the gods (and revisted) you'll see what i mean.

let me live is beautiful, some of the freddie solo/cross tracks are ruined by the changes. not ruined as in unlistenable, but ruined in that - how they appeared first time round is the definitive (how they were intended) to sound.

MIH is very much (pardon hte poor analogy) like a patchwork quilt that your aunt/grandmother might make. it was put together with love and the best of intent, but generally it was made from bits n bobs and really honestly, if it hadn't been made by someone you love, you'd probably never have kept it. some of the material used for this particular quilt wasn't the best and does  appear a little frayed around the edges.

and i would say that the biggest problem with MIH is unfortunately, Brian's influence. The great thing about queen was the balance between Fred and Brian - in the studio they reined each other in and managed to ensure quality control by being each others' biggest critics. With Freddie missing Brian's quality control was non-existent.

as i said i like the album but it's certainly NOt very good. 9/10 for intent and sentiment, only 5/10 for quality.

No matter what people say, MIH was Freddie's last hurrah and I love this album purely because of the vocal performance. Every song sends a shiver down my spine as no vocalist in Freddies physical state should be able to produce such powerful, beautiful & monumental performances on any recording ever. Awesome album...FACT!

yea but most of freds vocal performances were done when he was healthy.  Only 4 songs were new....I do rate this album as one of his best albums vocally.  Even though they were mostly old.  Not a huge fan of heaven for everyone and too much love will kill you,  but vocally both songs are among his best.  A winter's tale is still one of my all time favorites.

Healthy = HIV/AIDS wasn't affecting him (yet).

lol, yes!.....until 1989/1990.  a winter's tale was sang in 1990 and his voice was great.  So was mother love, though you could really hear the strain in his voice on that one.  Those are the two highlights on MIH for me.  Not only because of sentimental reasons either.  i actually love both songs.

This does lead to my next question: Was it the upcoming bronchial-pneumonia that started straining Freddie's voice in 1991?

If we are going to talk about Freddies input into albums/songs you only have to look at the making of One Vision to see how much they listened to him and took advice

I think MIH is still a good album

====================

really a rude and morbid question but short answer to be no, it was only his illness in general.  penumonia was what killed him at the end and nothing to do with sound of his voice if he had had it from 90 (when his voice begins to change) he owuld have been a dead man months too earlier.
