Jim Jenkins interview on Queenonline

I was a little taken aback to read that his least favourite album is The Game, one of his favourites is Hot Space, and he told Freddie that Play The Game was a terrible song!!

I read it... the way he comes across, if I had to compare him to a character in a TV show, would be Stevie from Eastbound & Down....lol!!! if you don't know who this is, search quickly on youtube...

I wonder what bands would really say about this level of superfandom if made to be brutally honest.  I remember Nick Mason expressing discomfort or incredulity or something along those lines at the super dedicated in 'Inside Out'.  It's got to be a bit strange.  Hell, we all probably look a bit strange.  But can you imagine being so flushed with insiderhood that you tell Fred to his face that 'Play the Game' was a bad song?  It's one I can tend to forget for whatever reason, so am always freshly taken away whenever I listen.

I've got nothing against the dude, just hope that I've got better things to worry about when I'm nearing my fifties/sixties than what colour underwear Freddie wore.

Re "Play The Game" I can imagine giving my honest opinion if asked for it - and give it in a positive way. (I quite like PTG but think it could've been developed further.) But I couldn't imagine out of the blue saying "you know what, Fred, PTG sucks" - unsolicited.

For example - if Brian asked my opinion :-) - I would say "Dangerland" had a great riff but scarcely develops (except for a little at the end).

If Brian asked my opinion I would say (and have said) "Dangerland sounds like something cut from 'Phantom of the Opera' in the interest of good taste.  Martin Packer thinks that's because it had a great riff but scarcely develops, except for a little at the blessed end. :)

What is 'Dangerland' please?

Jim Jenkins is a personal friend of mine and I KNOW he is not a moron.

You obviously don't know know him but you opine that he is a moron on a Queen discussion board and then don't back it up.

I never met Jim Jenkins but he does not come across like a fanatic to me. Unlike other self-important "super fans" he never made a big deal of his "fandom" but helped the fan club with his knowledge like probably no other person. Queen is just his hobby  - other people pay a fortune to see formula 1 races or travel the world to take photos of specific trains. I think that Jim must be a happy person to have a hobby that gave him so much joy and wonderful memories and brought him so many friends. His book is still a very important reference for anyone looking for Queen related FACTS.

I always liked the story about "now that the moustache is gone you might write some decent songs again". In the QOL version that connection got lost a bit but it was always one of the funniest Queen anecdotes I heard :-) Freddie must have been close to speechless :)

Well, I'd definately like to hear those recordings Jim Jenkins made during the Crazy Tour...

Apparently he recorded some those gigs. he mentioned Manchester in the article he wrote for the fanclub.
