Do you think John still plays his bass?

I was thinking the other day if he still played, and if he did how much? Or has his skills deteriorated over the years? What do you think?

I was listening to an interview with Roger Waters the other day.

Waters said that once Syd Barrett left Pink Floyd he wanted nothing to do with the band, "EVER" (and he emphasised this word.

In many ways, comparing JD with Barrett is unfair, particularly as the later seemed to suffer from some form of breakdown. However, I suspect that JD has taken a similar approach with Queen and the music industry in general.

So in answer to your question, my guess (and of course it is just that), is that he has not played an instrument for years and has no interest in playing or participating in music.

A shame, I wish things were different.

when i discussed this issue with a lady of the fan club in barnes, she told me that john still had a recording studio at home but she did not know if he still writes and play.

last time we saw him with a precision in hands was in the no one but you video.

maybe he plays for his granchildren...

It would be a complete shame if he didn't do music, at least for himself. John was/is a fantastic talent, and a great songwriter. To quit the music business was his decision, and it may have been for more personal reasons vs artistic. To compare him to Syd Barrett is not even an accurate comparison. Totally different people and totally different reasons, I would think.

What exactly would you expect John to be playing?

 - Is it possible that he broke out the "Mel Bay's Guide To Bass" to freshen up on his chops?

 - Got jealous of Tony Levin and finally bought a Chapman Stick

 - Hoping to get The Immortals up and running... finally.

 - Making backing tracks for local cover bands

or he's just working on his autobiography "Yeah, I was in Queen, too."

Side note:

What are the odds that a guy that does flooring work for John has a buddy that posts on Queenzone?

About the same for a reunion tour, I'd say.  But there's a remote chance...

Second Side note:

Since it's POSSIBLE that John reads posts on Queenzone, did the Flooring Guy's buddy just cost him a sweet gig?

John's son Luke plays the bass, guitar, keybords and SINGS!
It's all over his facebook. And yes, they have a studio in their house,
'cause Luke records there.

Who do you think has taught Luke to play?

Luke Deacon with his guitar.

I can't imagine not playing guitar anymore (through choice, that is) - but we're all different!  Deacy will always have my respect for giving the Robbie Shilliams version of WATC the proper blasting that it deserved.  Fuck, that thing was awful.

1) pretty sure he still picks up the bass every once in a while. maybe not every day, but whenever he gets the itch to.

2) having 1 particular room of queen stuff make a lot more sense than having like 10 of them - how many do you need? Plus, John was not exactly the most boastful member of the band.

3) He is retired - he decided his job as member of one of the biggest bands in the world is over. He did what he wanted to do - there's nothing more to it. I'm sure he enjoyed his moment while it lasted.

4) He doesn't need the money (not that the Brian and Roger do either). Mind you, the royalties still keep piling in I'm sure.

5) no one needs to feel sad or sorry that he doesn't want to take part - his case is nothing like Syd Barett's. Syd Barett never got to be a star - Pink Floyd were unheard of while he was with the band. Syd Barett had some type of brakdown - John Deacon didn't. John Deacon decided to call it quits while the band was on top.

I do however, think he should play a more active role in keeping the Queen brand fresh - taking part in certain charity outings as well as award shows. THAT, he should be doing - he owes it to the band's legacy. It's the responsible thing to do for himself, Freddie as well as the millions of fans that still sing his songs. It's fine if he doesn't like the limelight - but he should make the effort to make an appearance here and there.
