It would take a half drunk programmer about 15 minutes to set up basic IP or IP range blocking.  While I fully support the principles of latitude here, if those principles allow banning - which they apparently do - then there is no reason not to IP ban when that becomes necessary, as it clearly has.  I do this work for a living so it's extra painful to know how easy some of the solutions to the more irritating bugs are.  If I worked in a Microsoft environment for web application development and not a Unix one I'd have long ago bugged Richard to death about letting me assist with the code maintenance if he no longer cares.  There are also almost endless canned forum solutions now that could be set up in half an hour that could mimic the discussion areas and be almost seamlessly integrated.

In the meantime, for those that still find value here and are not yet irreversibly bored or frustrated the only way to 'fight back' is to *not* abandon it to trolls and meatheads.

Sure it can.  People in charge are just choosing not to do anything about it.  The trolls now run this place.  If the forum engine needs a complete overhaul, then it should be done.  This place used to have hundreds of regular posters, and it's down to a few dozen now, largely because the trolls have driven them away.
