Going against the grain

Most people on Queenzone hate Rain Must Fall with a burning passion and glorify Save Me for all they feel it's worth. I'm the complete opposite. I like Rain Must Fall a lot, but I HATE Save Me. God, why did Brian ever write it? And why did he have Kerry cover it? I love her voice, but that song... is terrible to the 'n'th degree. Anybody out there who goes against the grain? For example, hates Drowse and loves Party? Side note: I was making educated guesses at popular opinion. I don't really like Drowse, actually. So that's another example of me splitting from fellow Queenzoners...

I like all the standard Queen songs a decent fan should like, but how about ....
Put Out the Fire, Friends WIll be Friends, The Fairy Feller's Masterstroke, See What a Fool I've
Been, Sweet Lady?  Is this going against the grain?

Some of these songs just resonate with some of us for reasons unknown.  Fortunately
there's such a huge assortment of songs in the catalog that makes this possible.

Well, I think Queen's masterpiece is March Of The Black Queen, whilst I have to be in the "mood" for Bohemian Rhapsody, because I'm so fecki' board of it.  Meanwhile, back to Save Me - it's one of my all time favourites....but I also LOVE Rain Must Fall.  Going "against" the grain....the best example I can give is that I just cannot stand about 50% of ANATO, but have a lot of time for Hot Space, The Works and The Miracle :)

Well, I love Delilah. Enough said.

Save Me and Drowse are both great songs.  I can see why some would hate Save Me though, as it could be seen as something Diane Warren might churn out.  But I think the focused drama works when it's about the loss of love rather than the glories of it, which are really kind of a quieter thing for me. 

Anyway, I really don't hate Body Language at all.  In fact I think it succeeds utterly at what it is, and it deserves it's place as a still often played 80's classic.  I also actually think a lot of the video, in part because it's such a blatant and unapologetic channeling of Fred's mind that it makes me smile.  And on the other end of the spectrum I don't love 'Love of My Life', though I do like it.  I think it's a good song, perhaps even a very good song, but not a great song.

The only song I tend to personally dislike is "Delilah." I'm not saying Freddie shouldn't have written it or that it's a terrible song, I just sort of cringe because of the subject matter and execution do nothing for me. I like cats, too, but it's a little too on the nose as Freddie serenading Delilah that I can't find context for it in my life. It doesn't spark my imagination (music or lyrics) and it doesn't lend itself to be universally applicable, like "All Dead, All Dead." If it were about a person, maybe, like "Layla" (or a million other odes), I could relate. If it rocked out, I could ignore the lyrics and appreciate the riff.

I won't fault anyone else liking it, I just don't, really.

In the past there were songs I didn't like as much as others (side 1 of Hot Space didn't get played for a long time after I bought the record), but I found researching the works and understanding the context brought a greater appreciation. I could related more as a result and that opened up my view.

It doesn't get much worse than the" meows" on Delilah. Friends don't let friends put songs like that on an album, no matter what they are going through.

I think would be there some minor problems if you loved Body Language and hated Bohemian Rhapsody... :-)))

That's basically because Rain Must Full is subpar, and Save Me is great.  This is good observational journalism on your part, by the way.

Wow, what a great thread for me to express just how weird of a Queen fan I am. Here goes:
-The Miracle is my least favorite Queen album. There is not one single track on the album I can stand.
-Dancer is the best track on Hot Space.
-The Brighton Rock guitar solo should be a separate track. While it's amazing and genius and blah blah, it interferes with the flow and takes an hour long drive back to the song.

The whole Save Me debate is interesting to me. When I first started listening to Queen (via Greatests Hits), Save Me was one of my favorites. Then after a few years of randomly going through all of the studio albums I grew tired of Save Me because I realized it was middle of the barrel. I still like the song a lot, it just doesn't fascinate me the way other Queen songs do (and should, because it's f-ing Queen).

Just the opposite for Love Of My Life. As a brand new Queen fan, it seemed like a super cliche, boring love ballad. After years of sifting through a dozen or so video concerts and Montreal on daily rotation, I realized how special the song is. Freddie's voice is like a tender angel's voice (too much?).

I always thought Delilah was about Mary Austin. Until now!  Finally all those 'strange' lyrics fall into place. Thanks Rhyeking  :-)

I don't think anyone can, or should, judge whether a fan is a decent fan. There are songs that most would like, but I don't think anyone 'should' like any song.

Really? Fairy Feller is considerd agains the grain? its my favourite song from queen 2. anyway one song that i really like that everybody seems to hate is someday one day. i love it.
