Just because all these people were close to Freddie doesn't mean they were close to each other. With Freddie gone, why should Mary feel compelled to remain part of their lives. Maybe it was too hard for her emotionally to stay in touch. Maybe she just didn't like them. That doesn't make her a "cunt," nor does discussing Freddie in interviews. The cone of silence was lifted pretty much when Freddie told the press he had AIDS the day before he died. I remain baffled at the apparent need to elevate Mary to something like sainthood at the expense of the others in Fred's life. She seems to be a lovely, gentle person who enjoyed a unique, loyal and inspirational friendship with somebody we all admire. Why the need to leap beyond that and assign her all these extra character traits and motivations we really can know nothing about? She was hardly always reticent and her spread in OK! magazine (a slightly trashier version of People Magazine as far as I can tell) in 2000 was as gratuitous as any interview I've seen from anybody else in Fred's life. Maybe she didn't write a book because she's shy by nature, or maybe she was just busy raising a family, or maybe she didn't have to consider making an investment in time to flesh out Freddie as a complex and substantial human being because two other people did it for her.
As I said before, I do understand the gut reaction and the books certainly can be criticized, but nobody has yet made any case beyond the fact that we're just supposed to be appalled on principle because somebody cut somebody a cheque. Books of any nature should be judged first on whether they make a positive contribution. If they do, that somebody was compensated for their time and insight is not that important in the grand scheme of things. They presumably wouldn't be different books if they were written for free. Just because you or I can't imagine choosing an undertaking like that from our own limited perspective (and I can't really imagine it), doesn't mean we know everything we need to know to make a fair judgement. As I've pointed out what feels like a dozen times, they're largely sentimental fluff. It's not like anybody wrote Mommie Dearest. Time to cut those guys a break I think. And time to rethink the canonization of Mary while were at it.

don't tell me to calm down. if you write stuff that is rubbish then you should accept some criticism. Mary was not a c*nt. you are reading a book that is full of bile from interviews and quotes from a few sad old c*nts who couldn't stand the fact that Feddie left it all to Mary. If Freddie had told her.."make sure they always have a home" she'd have honoured it.
the key thing in all of this is that those sad old c*nts show so much respect for Freddie that they'll sell out any private stories and personal info for a couple of thousand quid a time to newpapers and book writers...
Mary, on the other hand has kept a dginified silence...the only stuff she has ever said is stuff that was already widespread public knowledge..... when you add it all up....ONLY Mary had truly respected freddie's memory

1. is there a prize for who finishes first?
2. it's hardly fucking "war and peace" - there's not much of a challenge in finishing that "book" in one evening
3. no questioning of the written word - some twat gave an inteview slagging off Mary and she's automatically "a cunt"
4. think for a minute if any of those "sad old c*nts" woulda said a word about Freddie while he was alive? NO. why? because he'd have disowned them...they were all cashing in...after his death...no respect, no love...no nothing...selfish little c*nts...all of em...and liars to boot!!!!
it's clear that everything in the book was taken as read. teenagers are supposed to have inquiring, reasoning minds. once they start accepting everything they're told/read the world is fucked for good.

I simply take solace from the fact that the process of natural selection has always existed, so I'm not worried in the least.
When I was 14, I didn't think overly critically. It comes gradually. That said, when I was 14 I didn't have forums to just write down the first thing that came to mind. All we had was pen and paper, so we had to think first before writing. We were taught to formulate a thought before expressing it.
Computers are eroding away that ability from the lower 50% of the population. Again ... the process of natural selection. Those who can figure it out, will. If anything, from what I've seen, today's kids are getting smarter overall.
