You know what is interesting though is the degree to which three separate people living the very same event saw things so differently. Both Jim and Peter in their books expressed some feelings of being pushed out and pushed aside and feelings that Garden Lodge was being scrubbed of the warm feelings it had always held for them because of some of the decisions that were being made. But this is how Mary described Peter, Jim and Joe and that same time in an interview she did in 2000:
'I felt very much out of my depth really,' she explains.'Freddie's staff had been like family to me, but after his death most of them had left because he'd been so financially generous to them. I had sleepless nights worrying about everything. I felt as if I'd done something wrong and paranoia set in. Some of the fans even told me I was only the keeper of the house. That hurt.'
I find that really interesting, particularly her description of how and why they left, and frankly I believe all of them. It's so easy to imagine how hard it would have been in the middle of such huge grief and huge changes for them to have accurately communicated and perceived each other's perspectives. I really think Mary did her best in a difficult and unusual situation, and the books don't express contempt for her so much as hurt feelings and hurt pride and confusion. So easy for misunderstandings to have occurred, like Mary offering their gifts to Fred back likely thinking that would be thoughtful and generous, and the guys taking that as having their connections to the house and to Freddie further undone when they seem to have been not quite ready for that. The guys not being able to understand that Mary practically felt sick with responsibility for the whole thing, driving some of the decisions like alarms and access rules and security and such. Mary maybe not fully tuned in to how it feels to have to leave your home reluctantly under really sad circumstances, and that it was a lot more than bricks and mortar to them. Lots of examples like that I think.

you read one book where a load of old tw*ts who have tarnished the memory of a pop legend by divulging details of his final days, and believe it all to be fact? the whole point of intellect is that you have to learn to take an objective view. and in this case the objective view is that - they were paid for their comments - and they'll only get paid if the comments are worth reading....so they can't just say "oh freddie was unwell and couldnt do things for himself" . no. they needed to embellish things and even tell lies...make it a story worth paying for.

IMO we can't really be sure how correct we are about EITHER Jim or Mary. BOTH were messed up post-Freddie's death, BOTH were probably trying to cope and messed-up people tend to cope in messed-up, weird ways and not always do stuff that's sensible. I felt particularly queasy after reading "Mercury and Me" because as far as I could see some of those details of Freddie's death were things that should have died with him, and not spread out for the entire world to know. I just don't know if I can judge Jim on that score however, because what do I know really? Maybe he wanted to let it all out and over with. Like Mary did. Maybe being around them was too much for her to handle in an extremely tough harrowing situation.
Anyway...back to the topic...I think the Untold Story documentary goes into that bit of detail about Brian dating Mary and Freddie meeting her through him. I guess it was more casual friendly dating than anything else, which would probably be why he didn't mind so much when Freddie asked Brian if he could date her.
