That's just so odd that he can play guitar that well all these years and have a bad memory, he's sort of like an eccentric mad professor!

I don't think it's a bad memory per se. It's just average. Averagely, a sixty-year-old person wouldn't remember 100% of details about his job, as it was just work for him. What for us may be an unforgettable solo or concert or whatever, for him it was just another day in the office, and just one of the maaaaaaaaaany recording sessions or concerts he's had in his life.
