GratefulFan wrote:[/b  Utterly apart from all that, for many there is much to dislike about his tone, his delivery, his instincts, his musicality and his taste.  The delusion that liking his output on whatever level is somehow superior to and more reasonable and enlightened than not liking his output is a virus that has infected QZ for months now. The amount of time spent on arrogantly dressing down people for not liking a douchey American Idol contestant and saying so is equal parts amusing and annoying.  Get over yourselves.

Really.I'm years of life experience and personal enlightenment past needing to conspicuously and self consciously fly my freak flag in support of gay homies everywhere.  In an instance like this I'm content to let all human beings stand or fall on their faces, glittering and otherwise, on merit.  Let me know when you catch up.  You'll like it here--it's a lot less awkward and incoherent.
Oh my! LOL, this was absolutely priceless. I wish I could write like that. I wasn't sure I could get through reading all the AL stuff today, it's mostly repetitive and boring however, it was all worth it reading Grateful Fan. Can I buy the last paragraph from you and use it? heh

He's really not such a bad singer when he cuts the Mariah Carey shit. If he could just focus on the material, serve the songs a bit, it'd be a better show. I don't really think his voice suits the material, but there are plenty of ways for this show to improve. We'll see I guess.

But he really, really has to stop those off-key improvs.

It's free on the condition that you f*ck up the grammar, spelling and punctuation and credit it to one Daniel Nester of New York state, USA.

Daniel, Daniel, Daniel. Don't you know that 90% of Glamberts are not teenyboppers but, instead, retarded middle-aged women? You have us mixed up with Beliebers.

^ LOL. Nobody ever called you retarded though! :)
On a serious note, I was hoping you'd contribute to the Adam Lambert fanbase thread. Dispel some of the mystery for me as to why perfectly normal bright and accomplished women act so weird in a group. :P

Zebonka said I sound retarded *pouts*. And define "weird."
· Member since
Hmmm. Zebonka's pretty smart so I guess it's possible you are a teensy teensy bit retarded. :) I'll define "weird" later on the fanbase thread when I have more time. In the mean time I'll just say that I've enjoyed your near undetectable levels of retardedness and think you've been a very good and even brave ambassador for AL. It's not easy here and I'm glad your list of potential disorders includes OCD levels adequate to make you keep breaking your vow to never come back. :P

TY. I look forward to reading your definition of weird. ;)

Well I had to watch a youtube video of the show bit by bit out here in the boonies with a stop and start download speed. gnosbt videos were the ones.

I couldn't hear the bass player much at all, which ruined AOBTD and CLTCL. Even when he was the featured player it sounded thin and anemic.

I loved seeing Brian and Roger out there having a good time, more or less.

I agree that Adam needs to get rid of some Adam mannerisms that are annoying additions to Queen material, and his voice isn't right for everything, but considering they didn't have much rehearsal time to put this thing together, as far as I know anyway, I thought he did pretty well with the vocals.

I am looking forward to seeing the show from farther down the road when they get more comfortable and get some of the bugs out, if there is time for that, and hope that there will eventually be a DVD so I can see it uninterrupted.

Last couple of times I was here I couldn't post anything, so haven't been back for a long time, but I knew I'd get all the negative reviews here, so couldn't resist dropping in, and when I tried to post it worked this time. I even was able to access my profile and change my email. Will wonders never cease?

One frequent message of Lambert's image, performances and words is "Gay gay gay! I'm gay! Look at me! I'm gay! Has everybody noticed that I'm really hip and gay? No?  Let me french my guitar player on national prime time TV so it's clear.". I deeply appreciate that homophobia is still a scourge on the existence of too many gay human beings and that an artist like Lambert can play a role in incremental cultural change. However as an observer I claim the common privilege of criticism of artists and the arts to note that I think his effectiveness on that message is limited and less than that of other artists who are simply better at communicating it without being so on the nose, self serving and incessant.

Or maybe he just likes doing stuff like that, and that it comes naturally out of performing . Keep digging your idiocy further, GF. You might remember Mick Jagger licking Ron Wood on Saturday Night Live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF5cOl9ti_Y)
decades before Adam Lambert did such an absolutely UNCONSCIONABLE thing, or Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro sticking fingers up each others' asses on their first two (and awesome!) world tours. Or, you know, Freddie Mercury wearing Glenn Hughes outfits. Or you may not remember these things; that's fine.  The big takeaway, now that we have an actual example of an artist "leveraging" his or her message: GratefulFan will have no homo acts onstage! That shit is just not allowed, motherfucker!

This, however, is the kicker:

I'm years of life experience and personal enlightenment past needing to conspicuously and self consciously fly my freak flag in support of gay homies everywhere.

Whew. Man, alive. I'm sure that such a fricking relief for you now, such a weight off your shoulders. I'm sure you were such a supporter of "gay homies" before, and now you're just reaping the benefits.

I'll end with a random quote from GratefulFan, part of hundreds of threads where he complains about Paul Rogers --

At some point I think you do have to start adjusting your filter for people who seem to be perpetually mad at everything and everyone that doesn't conform to whatever it is they think others ought to think/do/be. Like it or not, that does indicate a tendency to raging ego at least sometimes, or perhaps more accurately egocentrism.

Yep. He might want to follow his own advice.

A couple more thoughts: Everyone here under 60 quit complaining about Brian and Roger doing things s-l-o-w, or omitting something particularly difficult. You don't have the life experience on you to criticise for these reasons. When they toured for Queen & PR I remember Brian saying that got up one day and his hand wouldn't work. The older you get the more unpleasant things happen. I enjoyed the hell out of seeing them out there, however they wanted to play.

And at least give Adam a break as whenever anyone else is out there singing with Queen Freddie's ghost isn't far away. Queen's songs were either written by or for Freddie's voice, and performed that way. Some adjustments might help. Adam does not have the luxury of being there for the genesis of these songs and growing with them and knowing them in the way that the Queen members did. Learning that much material in order to sing it was more of a crash course I think. I hope he can abandon "Adamizing" them with the flourishes he likes as those don't fit, though I guess some of this is about reframing the music for a younger crowd too. It could be that I am too old to appreciate that, but then I never liked Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston.

Daniel, I think GratefulFan is a she, not he. Unless I'm wrong?

Inu, I dunno, actually. Guess I made assumptions about GF's gender, or defaulted to the masculine.

I quite enjoyed leafing through this thread. Zebonka's posts were more entertaining than much of the show.

My initial thoughts:

-Brian and Roger still have the goods
-Adam is a very good singer, although the vibrato needs to be tamed and some of his vocal antics go beyond what the song calls for

That said - no matter how good or bad it is, people are going to complain. Anyone who attempts to sing Queen songs is subject to such incredible scrutiny under the Mercury microscope, because the man has set the bar so damn high. Anyone with functioning ears knows that Freddie Mercury is the greatest rock singer of all time. But it doesn't make all other singers unworthy of attempting Queen songs, as so many people seem to believe.

Lambert is quite good, although he doesn't meet the needs of all of the songs. No single singer can. Even the Queen Extravaganza needed four lead singers to cover all the ground. But there is great potential here with Lambert. Certainly not for an album, but for an extended life together on the road. They have a few kinks to iron out, and a few gigs from now this thing could be very good.

And for the record - the fast We Will Rock You was no slower than it was in 1977. But Dragon Attack ... man, that was slow.

Under Pressure was the best song overall, both vocally and for Brian looking absolutely badass with the double-neck. And as far as I'm concerned, Lambert's best song was Who Wants To Live Forever. I invite everyone to try to remove their biases for a minute and truly ask themselves, how many living singers in this world could do adequate justice to that song in the original key? Not many.

In the absence of a second guitar, having Lambert grab the harmony guitar line at the end of the I Want It All solo was a wise decision. Like him or not - he is a pro. Most singers would've fucked that one up royally. No pun intended.

Couldn't help but smile all the way through A Kind Of Magic. Magic it was.
