I think it's sad that we have to turn music into a game show. There is no single greatest guitarist at all time. These contests are just excuses to sell more magazines.

What is meant by "Greatest"?

Don't we "gulp" willingly everything they want us to, heaps of dreams and illusions, mediocrities as icons , trash as masterpieces, books together with polls? Game you say, I can add game of manipulation, part of the great madness, The Showbiz, the scheme whose roots, ironic enough lie in our ludic spirit, the foundation of any form of art, now turned into the obsessive, pathetic wish of "having fun". And fun we have, the entertainment industry is selling us the "power" to vote , many times if we're cheating.

I voted for Eddie Van Halen.

Many times, I hope. If not, don't waste your time having an intelligent discussion with me!

I remember looking at a "Best song of all time" poll on the early Internet days (1995ish) and thinking "Wow, so THIS IS IT, it must be true if it's on the Internet!".
I was 14. What's YOUR excuse?

I've been suspecting for a while that sometimes posting means talking to yourself, reading and commenting only the post above , at the best .The consequence ? Misunderstanding. If you'd read my previous comments on voting, 3 posts above, only 3, you would have understood the implied irony in my answer to Holly. I hope!!! Next time , when I want to be ironic , I'll do a favor to you, I'll choose a less, less subtle answer. Or you did and didn't understand anything?! What's YOUR excuse?

Thanks Yoda.

Oh, I do see the irony. We do tend to accept all kinds of crap from "the Machine" and, to be honest, we all have our guilty pleasures and not always have to be 'hardcore rockers' stickin' it to the man, hehe :)... So these polls are sometimes amusing. Still, not my cup of tea. My point was that this was way more relevant when I was younger.
I guess the "what's your excuse" bit was too much. Didn't mean to insult or anything. I just don't care for those things anymore.

These polls would make more sense if they define "greatest". Without doing that it's entirely subjective. In any case, I do hate these polls though.

Probably it would be more 'entertaining' if they made the effort of coming up with some kind of methodology to back the results of these lists. Define several categories, scales and ways to measure the unmeasurable, assign points, etc. That I would be interested in seeing, an attempt to be more objective.
It would still only be a bloody list, though, no different from what I could come up with in 10 seconds if asked.

I coudln't agree more, for example I like Randy Rhoads as much as Brian May.
