TBH, those weren't his best years as a songwriter. Remember Rain Must Fall? Pain Is So Close to Pleasure? Cool Cat? But IMO, all those songs (NTB included) are way better than Break Free.

John Deacon its one of the best Queen Composers (IMHO) along with Freddie.
Brian does excellent rock compositions but he really doesn't do exciting songs. he does intellectual masterpieces (like the prophet song, for example).
Cool Cat and Pain Is So Close to Pleasure are awesome catchy 80 pop songs. Some people seem not being pleased everytime Freddie uses falsetto.
I Want to Break Free its a great song. Over there in the top Queen songs. But, I do think that it suffers from being poorly produced , and thats an illness that started in Hot Space to The Miracle.
The best proof that a lot of 80's queen songs were good (even hot space ones) is that they really rocked in their live versions.
lets remember also that No Turning Back is from John Deacon & The Immortals . So i guess we could blame John and his bandmates.

Not an excuse IMO. Rock Me Amadeus, All I Ask of You, Calling America, You Can Call Me Al, Take My Breath Away and even Papa Don't Preach were also tracks that could and did fit the frame of pop in those years, but they were waaaaaaaay better.

Yes, that one and a couple more but most of what he wrote is not really *that* intellectual, or at least not more so than what Freddie, John and Roger did.

For me they're neither awesome nor catchy. There are loads and loads of 'awesome catchy 80s pop songs' but Cool Cat is not one of them; neither is PISCTP.

Freddie used falsetto on Somebody to Love and it was marvellous; he used falsetto on Black Queen and it was magic; he used falsetto on La Japonaise and it was great; he used falsetto on The Kiss and it was phenomenal. So no, it's not about Freddie using falsetto, it's about shitty songs.

I think it's very well produced, very well sung and very well played, but it's still a very weak song compared to most of Queen tracks, and compared to most of John's tracks.

IWTBF on stage was fine, but not a masterpiece. If You Can't Beat Them, Need Your Loving Tonight, You're My Best Friend, Spread Your Wings ... they were all a hell of a lot better either live or in the studio, IMO.

If You Cant Beat Them and In Only 7 Days are amongst the worst 5 Queen songs ever. True album filler after the others brought their songs, realised there was space left on the album and then said 'So John, what have you got?'
IWTBF is, in my opinion the worst Queen single release. The shorter album version is better than the single. Take away the cowbell and me and Christopher Walken will be on your sorry ass ;-)

Im glad Queen was not the boring Hard rock band that some people here wants it to be (That band existed when they did the cosmos rock and look how awful that album is). Deacon and Freddie put the right amount of pop in the mix to make Queen music something different , radio friendly and not crappy at the same time

Allow me to disagree. It's a great song to play live. Very exciting with room to do a lot. The studio version is poorly produced in my opinion by using the synthesized guitar solo and heavy compression.That wasn't the best choice

It IS of its era in a cheesy boppy way.... Keyboard bridge as well... Never seen the film, heard it was done for a children's film project? Or something of the like?
Curiously... I've always loved RAIN MUST FALL... I finally realized while playing it again and again through the years and then FINALLY one rainy night in a pub at the juke-... That the song is basically John's version of an uplifting Stevie Wonder song...
Just imagine Stevie singing it. And give the rhythm a little pause step. Maybe more staccato.
Something like his 80's era synth cheese (hit and miss) right up to "fun day" and "tomorrow robins will sing"

I really like Rain Must Fall too! I did when I first heard it, and I've never really been able to figure out why some people here seem to despise it. It's a great, fun tune, and pretty satisfying musically.
I used to hate Beat Them, but it grew on my quite a bit recently. If I had to rank all the Queen songs, I think it would be somewhere slightly lower than the middle right now; I really enjoy now.
Cool Cat's grown on me a bit as well, but I really have no strong opinion on that, Pleasure or Seven Days. Depends what mood on in.

John Deacon also did recordings with Elton John around 1980 I think. I guess you would say as a session musician...though the songs should without dought say "featuring John Deacon"! Maybe in a re-release of Elton's studio l.p.s, eh?!
