Guess Sir Pat must've been borrowing heavily off the house's equity to pay for all those telescopes and parties! Anyway, well done Brian.

Oops, just reading Bri's soapbox. Seems he's not happy this story is out

I had a sense when I read the article initially that Brian wouldn't be entirely happy about it. When these things are done quietly it's often not only about the humility of the giver but the dignity of the receiver. Unfortunately, while I understand Brian's Soapbox response, it actually serves to emphasize the very impressions Sir Patrick's friends and benefactors would have preferred to avoid. His honour would likely have been served better with a finesse of the issue rather than a Soapbox rant.

Was it even posted on his soapbox for real? I don't see ANY mention on his website

Interesting. It does seem to be gone, but it was definitely there. It was a two or three paragraph rant about how grubby the press was, figuratively digging through dustbins and such, and that what was done for Sir Patrick was meant to be among friends. It ended with something like "is this the kind of journalism we want in this country?". So, not sure why it's now down, but as I said earlier I think it's better that it's not there. I guess Brian thought so too, though I have to say it's a (perhaps irrational) pet peeve of mine when things disappear from the internet or get substantively changed without explaining or noting the original reference. Regardless, the important take away from all of this is an inspiring example of friendship, loyalty and generosity in quietly ensuring a beloved British icon who brought science and wonder to the people could do so in security and dignity until the end.

I think he may have read your initial post, well said.

Yup - it was on his soapbox but he must have deleted it.

Good on him to have taken this very private action for no reason other than as a reflection of his feelings for a good friend, and true british icon.

It would be a very logical next step in Brian´s live. At least we know that he´s passionate about it!
I just hope that in the future he can level both is music output with his science output.

I´m pretty shure he´s a great astronomer but i fucking love the musician! Rock on Brian!

If Brian bought the house, that's truly great. Perhaps Sir Moore's pet cats may continue to live on there, just as Freddie's cats did at garden lodge. I'm sure he'd be happy to know they still have their very own home.
I'll be right behind you, right until the ends of the Earth

Something tells me music will be in third or fourth place if he takes this job. With music he really has done it all. With astronomy there is so much more ground he can cover, so that's probably where his energy would go.

He doesn't play a single note he doesn't want to play, and if he never played another note again in favour of doing things like The Sky At Night, I wouldn't blame him for a second.

All this aside - Brian on TV weekly would just be so damn cool.

Even if, rather than regaling us with stories of Queen in the studio or playing some sublime new compositions, he is is talking a load of old shite about a load of old shite?!
