In the city near where I live, on New Year's Day there is a Beatles tribute group performing Sgt. Pepper's and Abbey Road, and there's a KISS tribute band.
Decisions, decisions...

Beatles tribute, surely?

The Beatles.
Hands down, The Beatles.

If I were picking the original bands, I'd obviously say the Beatles - you'd be a sad bastard if you didn't.
But I don't know anything about the tribute bands you're picking between. The Beatles one might be utterly shocking. The KISS one, regardless of how you feel about KISS, might be a good night out. Hell they might even be more fun than the real thing at this point.
Really depends on the bands. I'd rather endure someone doing a sappy and poncy rendition of Beth than listen to someone mangle the Beatles.

There are some pretty capable Beatles tribute bands around, actually. Not that I care much for tribute bands to begin with.
Was this meant to be sarcastic (the joke being that it should be an obvious choice between Kiss and The Beatles)? I took it that way but I seem to be the only one

No, I thought this at first, too - but sometimes it's hard to gauge these things online! Thought I'd go for the obvious, but serious, answer. That said, Zeb does make a very fair point (and I kinda like Kiss anyway...)

There are a lot of good Beatles tributes out there. If they're booked in a theatre, chances are they're excellent. If it's in a bar, you may want to steer clear.
I saw Rain a few years back and they were absolutely brilliant.

saw the "Fab 4" recently - they were excellent - did two sets
first was the pre-rubber soul stuff
then the second half was all the stuff the original beatles never did live
they were really good - the sound was tight and playing was impressive

I've heard that the Bootleg Beatles are what it's all about....but I've never actually had a chance to catch one of their shows. Checked a bit out on YouTube: they're ok, but not great....unless that's just the sound quality on YT??

I would see the KISS tribute. My logic is that all Beatles tribute bands are bound to sound shit compared to the Beatles. Whereas a KISS tribute band will no doubt sound just as good, if not better, that the original KISS.

First of all: yes, it was a joke.
I've actually been to the KISS tribute a couple times: it was a pretty good time, pretty much what you might expect. For that reason alone, it would probably be more worthwhile going to the Beatles thing. Plus, they're booked at a pretty nice theatre, so according to The Real Wizard they should be pretty good.
Thanks, guys!

not quite. the beatles boots i've heard are let down bit shit quality PAs
with modern equipment and better "live" playing most tribute bands can perform as well or better than the bands they emulate.in fact, beatles tributes benefit from one advantage the beatles never had (once the left the "cavern" circuit) their sound is suited better to smaller intimate venues...which plays into the tribute bands' hands somewhat
the only live beatles gig i liked listening to is the rooftop gig

How do you know they were shit PAs? Maybe the PAs were the best in the world but the band were shit?

Unlikely.
Look up Tokyo 66 on youtube. The girls are screaming and they can't hear themselves - and they sing the harmonies of If I Needed Someone flawlessly.

There's a few great Beatles gig recordings, though when I say great I kind of mean 'surprisingly good considering all of the shit they had to put up with'.
