But he does!

On a somewhat relevant note, Star Trek came out in America today! I'm excited!

I don't usually like making arguments based on how much money something made, but the original Star Wars has to have done something right in order to be the second highest grossing movie of all time (adjusted for inflation).

Also, *did.

Imo the original Star Wars movie was - at the time - a piece of genius in cinema history. For the first time science fiction and ancient tales and archetypes were combined to a unique movie world. Nothing like it had been seen before, the sheer novelty of the experience is hard to imagine today. The fans of course loved the whole trilogy. In comparison the prequels are late, uninspired spin-offs, nothing special in the vast variety of todays movies. I can imagine that people who saw the whole set of movies later in life have a different opinion but watching Star Wars for the first time in 1978 is unforgettable for me - and I am not a particular fan.
I do not want any google ads here.

I never understood why there's so much hatred towards the prequels. Both trilogies had poor acting, and lame dialogue. And as far as annoying characters, Jar Jar was a pain in the ass, but even as a kid I found C3PO kinda lame.
As far as storyline goes, I consider the original Star Wars: A New Hope to be the weakest of the 6. Too much predictability in terms of putting a fairy tale in space. Of course, the impact as far as film production and use of technology was huge at the time.
Also the lightsaber fights suck on the OT.

The only difference I see is that back when the OT was released it was easier for actors and producers to convince Lucas on how to make it better. On the PT, there were great scenes that he took out of the final cut of those movies, even though Rick McCallum begged him to put them on film.

I disagree with most of what you said, but don't really want to explain why. Basically, I just enjoy the originals a hell of a lot more than the new ones. TPM in particular just sucks.

However, you're particularly wrong there, and here's why: http://youtu.be/ORWPCCzSgu0?t=5m55s

Two guys swinging their laser swords at each other really fast doesn't interest me at all. Emotions interest me.

I get where you're coming from since I used to agree. However, while the duels with Darth Maul and between Skywalker and Kenobi are spectacular choreography wise, they're SO horribly devoid of emotion, or in fact anything beyond pure aesthetic appeal.

Kenobi and Vader in the original Star Wars was pretty crappy, granted. Kind of nice visually really, but not in terms of movement - that was just dull. The lack of any music whatsoever killed it completely.

However, V and VI more than make up for it in my opinion. Empire Strikes Back's lightsaber fight was so wonderfully climactic and dramatic, while still having story relevance and having had build up to it, unlike with Darth Maul, where it's just 'oh, this guy's meant to kill us because that's what he was told to do, we should kill him'. Luke and Vader in Return was even better, never fails to get my heart racing. The Emperor taunting Luke as he withholds but eventually succumbs to his anger and strikes Vader down brutally and mindlessly. I'd much rather see that clumsy and emotionally charged use of the lightsaber than any flawless gymnastic display of swordsmanship.

The choreography got worse as the prequels went on. By the time Revenge of the Sith came along I'm pretty sure they just gave up altogether. I'd go so far as to say it's some of the shittiest screen combat I've seen since Equilibrium.

For anyone who might be scratching their head going "duhhh, the swords were moving pretty fast, wots your problem", you might want to go and watch a Liam Neeson movie called Rob Roy for some notes on what a good fight looks like.

I haven't seen Revenge of the Sith since it came out, so that explains my poor recollection. I do recall them traversing pretty much every possible sort of situation within the constraints of the 'lava planet' setting, before finally ending up on a little hill made of gravel.

If anyone hasn't seen "Mr. Plinkett's" somewhat well-known exhaustive reviews on all three PT films, make sure you have a few hours to do nothing at all, go here and watch them. Hell, go watch ALL his reviews. They're really good, as long as you have a very good sense of humor and don't mind listening to a guy doing the same stupid voice for hours on end.

I'd recommend everyone all of Red Letter Media's stuff really, all very entertaining while still obviously very well informed in matters relating to cinema.
