So I tinkered a bit with this excellent source. Not saying mine is better, but maybe it can be a useful alternative to the original :-) Notice that first picture is "Before" and second is "After". To explain what exactly I did: 1. Removed some slight ghosting. Notice the white bright shadow on the right side next to letters. No, it's not just darkened out due to reduced brightness. This issue is very small though, but bit annoying once you notice it. Or maybe I just have OCD :-)
2. I've always thought it overall looks way too bright. I don't think the master tape looks this way. So I tried to regain a bit of brightened detail and information in the shot.
3. As for the logo. It's quite unnoticable if you view it from distance and don't pay much attention to it, albeit it has left sort of "scar" in it's place. That is because the logo originally wasn't 100 % alpha due to small darkened outlines. If it hadn't those dark outlines it would look much better. Anyway, I think it's better than removing with opaque logo removal technique, that is smudging out the patch which looks quite ugly. But with this, although not perfectly removed, it's quite unnoticable and has detail under it :-)

I also added a small bit of simulated film grain, thus reducing compression artifacts if any and banding. Plus I think that makes it look sexier :D For those interested here is some advanced media info: http://tny.cz/075bc719 It's also on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-JWn_Scyh8 Links: http://qk3f40.1fichier.com/en/ or https://mega.co.nz/#!mUF1xTyC!cJf27Dfh5dMOlNKjzEZOYlWMfjdbsVDfEmy_x9b3s1E

I've just downloaded it and you've done again very nice work. A couple of questions/comments :

1) Is the video playing faster? I haven't seen the Japanese TV broadcast for YEARS, so I don't know - did it also play so fast? Or did they really play slightly faster ? :-)
2) What did you use for the "ghosting removal"?
3) I LOVE the idea of putting the videos as mkv files and not DVDs. What is the general "consensus"? Are we two a minority?
4) Logo removal was great. I noticed the "insert forgotten english word during the next edit" in the top right corner only when I started to specifically look after it - great work. DeLogo? Or something more fashionable?

5) Do you have future plans already? :-)

Nice work, it looks great on a HD monitor!

Thanks :-) I used VirtualDub for ghosting and logo removal, also gradation curves filter for bringing the brightness down. Rendered as uncompressed AVI and then did a few minor tweaks in AVISynth, rendered directly to MKV.

I also have to tell you that I used MSU Deinterlacer in VirtualDub. It runs very slow, but it's the most HQ and best I've come across so far. Don't use yadif, bob etc. They are fast, but they are shite. For AVISynth TempGaussMC() is great. Just my two cents :)

1. I haven't changed anything about it. The frame rate also is the original, that is 29.97 fps.

2. Exorcist plugin on Virtualdub.

3. Yes, people think VOB is fashionable for some reason although it's way too dated compared to H.264, in which, 3000 bitrate is perfect and doesn't even need more for such SD videos as you can see in my video for example. While 3000 in MPEG would look plain horrible. H.264 is very handy because it demand fairly small file space for excellent compression.

4. Yep, DeLogo is awesome for alpha-blended logos. It's probably the strongest and best remover. At least as much as I'm aware.

5. Not yet, no. Any suggestions? :-)

I've got a question. Is it ok to enhance the "released" stuff like Rio '85 for example and post here? I wonder if that's allowed the same way as Matt's album revisions.

Yeah, but so am I right? I mean this source of Rio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Dcp33sQSV0
Can stuff like Tokorozawa '82 be enhanced and uploaded here? I mean all these past VHS, laserdisc whatever pre-DVD releases. Just wanna be sure until I start messing with some of that. You guys are here for way longer time than me so you'd probably know what's ok to post and what's not.

An official release will always remain an official release. It doesn't matter how old it is.

But if it cannot be purchased any more, what loss has Queen Production suffered? :)

^ bingo.

If you can find it on ebay, that means a private seller is making the bucks, not QP. They've earned their buck already.

However, in this particular case, some of the Tokyo 82 tracks are on the Live At The Bowl DVD, so they are still very much available.

Potential future losses should they ever decide to re-release it.

I see. I'll stick to unreleased things then. To be honest, the released VHS already has so good quality there's hardly anything to improve usually.
