surely it's permissible to empathize with upbeat happy people occasionally?

that does not sound happy.
if anything those vocals sound distinctly blues-ish

Yes bluesish, but in a carefree spirited way , defeated but still with some defiance.. Thats the best I can do. Brian undoubtedly specialises in downbeat numbers.
